Dot Plot Maker
Paste a list of values or a frequency table and get a clean dot plot (also called a line plot) instantly. Each value becomes a stacked dot or ✕ above a number line. Add a title and axis label, pick the marker and color, and download a PNG or SVG ready for worksheets, slides and homework.

Separate with commas, spaces or new lines. Words such as colors or pets make a categorical dot plot.
Each line: a value (number or label) and how many times it occurs.

How to use the Dot Plot Maker
- Enter your data: type or paste values separated by commas, spaces or new lines, or switch to Frequency table and enter value, count pairs.
- Add a title and axis label so the plot is ready to hand in or share.
- Adjust the axis if needed: group close values, or set the minimum, maximum and tick step.
- Choose the marker and color, and turn on counts or the mean/median lines.
- Download the PNG or SVG, and use the statistics and frequency table to describe the distribution.
How to read a dot plot
Every dot is one observation, and a stack of dots shows how often a value occurs. Use the plot to describe a distribution in four words: center, spread, shape and unusual features.
| Feature | What to look for | Statistic to quote |
|---|---|---|
| Center | Where the middle of the dots sits; the tallest stack | Median, mean, mode |
| Spread | How far the dots stretch along the number line | Range, IQR, standard deviation |
| Shape | Symmetric, skewed right (long tail to the right), skewed left, or with two peaks | Compare mean with median |
| Unusual features | Gaps, clusters and lone dots far from the rest (possible outliers) | Values beyond Q1 − 1.5·IQR or Q3 + 1.5·IQR |
Dot plot vs. other charts
| Chart | Best for | Keeps every value? |
|---|---|---|
| Dot plot / line plot | Small data sets (up to a few hundred values), whole numbers or simple fractions | Yes |
| Stem-and-leaf plot | Small data sets where exact digits matter | Yes |
| Histogram | Large or continuous data grouped into bins | No |
| Box plot | Comparing the five-number summary of several groups | No |
Tips for class-ready plots
- Label both the title and the axis, including units ("Hours of sleep", "Height (cm)").
- Use evenly spaced ticks that include values with no data, so gaps are visible. Set the tick step to 0.25 or 0.5 for fraction line plots.
- Keep the dots the same size and evenly stacked; that is what makes stack heights comparable.
- SVG for print, PNG for slides: SVG stays sharp at any size, and the PNG is exported at double resolution.
Frequently asked questions
What is a dot plot?
A dot plot shows each data value as a dot above a number line. Repeated values stack vertically, so the height of each stack is the frequency. It is a quick way to see the center, spread, clusters, gaps and outliers of a small data set.
Is a line plot the same as a dot plot?
In US elementary and middle school math, a line plot is a dot plot drawn with ✕ marks above a number line, often with fractional values such as 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4. Choose the Cross marker to draw it that way. A line plot is different from a line graph, which connects points over time.
How do I make a dot plot from a frequency table?
Switch to the Frequency table tab and enter one value and its count per line, for example "3, 5" for five data points equal to 3. The plot stacks that many dots above 3 and the statistics are calculated as if every data point had been listed.
Can I make a dot plot with categories?
Yes. If any entry is not a number, the values are treated as categories (for example favorite colors or pet types). Each category gets its own column on the axis and the mode is reported; mean and median are only shown for numeric data.
How do I describe the shape of a dot plot?
Look at where the stacks are tallest (center and mode), how far the dots spread (range and IQR), whether one side trails off further (skewed left or right), and whether there are gaps, clusters or isolated outliers. Symmetric dot plots have similar mean and median.
How many data points can a dot plot show?
Dot plots work best for roughly 10 to 200 values. With many close values, use Group values to round them, or use a histogram, which groups data into bins. This tool accepts up to 5,000 points and shrinks dots so tall stacks still fit.
How are the quartiles calculated?
The quartiles use the median-of-halves method taught in school and used by TI calculators: Q1 is the median of the lower half and Q3 the median of the upper half, excluding the overall median when the count is odd.
