How to use the What Are My GPS Coordinates

  1. Press Locate me and allow location access when your browser asks.
  2. Read your coordinates in decimal degrees and in degrees, minutes and seconds, with the accuracy radius.
  3. Copy them in the format you need, or open the spot in a map app.
  4. Press Start tracking to follow your position as you move and log every reading.
  5. Export the track as GPX for mapping apps or CSV for spreadsheets.

Coordinate formats explained

Every point on Earth is described by a latitude (north or south of the equator, −90° to +90°) and a longitude (east or west of the prime meridian through Greenwich, −180° to +180°). The same position can be written in three common ways:

FormatExample (Statue of Liberty)Used by
Decimal degrees (DD)40.689247, −74.044502Google Maps, apps, spreadsheets
Degrees, minutes, seconds (DMS)40°41′21.3″N 74°2′40.2″WPaper maps, surveying, aviation
Degrees and decimal minutes (DDM)40° 41.355′ N, 74° 2.670′ WMarine charts, handheld GPS units, geocaching

DD to DMS: the whole number is the degrees. Multiply the decimal part by 60 to get minutes, then multiply the remaining decimal by 60 to get seconds. For 40.689247: 0.689247 × 60 = 41.35482′, and 0.35482 × 60 = 21.3″, so 40°41′21.3″. Negative latitudes are south and negative longitudes are west.

DMS to DD: degrees + minutes ÷ 60 + seconds ÷ 3600.

How precise is each decimal place?

Decimal placesDegreesDistance at the equatorEnough to find
10.111.1 kmA city
20.011.11 kmA village
30.001111 mA street
40.000111.1 mA building
50.000011.11 mA person
60.00000111 cmSurvey-grade work

One degree of latitude is always about 111 km. A degree of longitude shrinks toward the poles: it is 111 km × cos(latitude), so about 85 km at 40° and 56 km at 60°.

Measuring the distance you moved

In tracking mode the tool adds up the distance between consecutive readings with the haversine formula, which treats Earth as a sphere with a radius of 6,371 km:

d = 2R · asin(√(sin²(Δφ/2) + cos φ₁ · cos φ₂ · sin²(Δλ/2)))

where φ is latitude and λ is longitude in radians. Readings jitter by a few meters even when you stand still, so short tracks indoors can show a small distance even if you haven't moved.

Tips for a better fix

  • Go outside or stand near a window: GPS needs a view of the sky.
  • Keep Wi-Fi on, even if you are not connected; phones use nearby networks to get a quicker, better fix.
  • Wait a few seconds. The first reading is often rough and improves as more satellites are found; tracking mode shows this.
  • Turn on precise location for your browser in your phone's settings (iOS and Android both offer an "approximate" option).

Frequently asked questions

How accurate are the coordinates?

It depends on how the device finds you. Phones with GPS outdoors usually get within 3 to 10 meters. Laptops without GPS use nearby Wi-Fi networks and are typically accurate to 20 to 100 meters, and a location based only on your IP address can be off by several kilometers. The tool shows the accuracy radius the device reports.

Why does it say location access is blocked?

You or your browser denied the permission. Click the lock or site settings icon next to the address bar, set Location to Allow, and reload. On phones, also check that location services are turned on for your browser in the system settings.

What is the difference between decimal degrees and DMS?

They are two ways to write the same position. Decimal degrees use one number per axis, for example 40.689247. DMS splits it into degrees, minutes and seconds: 40° 41′ 21.3″ N. One degree has 60 minutes and one minute has 60 seconds.

Why is altitude not available?

Most laptops and many phones indoors don't report altitude to web pages. GPS-equipped phones usually do once they have a good satellite fix outdoors.

Is my location sent to a server?

No. The coordinates are read by your browser and shown only on this page. Nothing is uploaded or stored. Map links only send the coordinates to the map site if you choose to open them.

Does this work without an internet connection?

Once the page is loaded, GPS-equipped phones can still get a fix offline. Laptops that rely on Wi-Fi positioning usually need a connection to look up their location.
