Paste an International Bank Account Number to check that its check digits, country code and length are correct before you send a payment. The tool splits the IBAN into bank code, branch and account number and shows the full mod-97 calculation. Everything runs in your browser.

How to use the IBAN Validator
Choose single or bulk mode.
Paste the IBAN (spaces and lower case are fine), or one IBAN per line in bulk mode.
Click Check IBAN; the result also updates as you type.
Read the verdict: country, length and check digits, plus the BBAN breakdown table.
Copy the print format or download the bulk results as CSV.
How the IBAN mod-97 check works
Take the example GB82 WEST 1234 5698 7654 32:
Remove spaces: GB82WEST12345698765432
Move the first four characters to the end: WEST12345698765432GB82
Convert letters to numbers (A = 10, B = 11 … Z = 35): W = 32, E = 14, S = 28, T = 29, G = 16, B = 11 → 3214282912345698765432161182
Divide by 97. The remainder is 1, so the IBAN is valid. Any other remainder means a typo.
Because the number is too big for ordinary arithmetic, the calculation is done piece by piece: keep a running remainder, multiply it by 10, add the next digit and take mod 97 again.

Always write an IBAN on paper in groups of four characters separated by spaces (the "print format"), and without spaces in electronic payment files.
Frequently asked questions
How is an IBAN validated?
Following ISO 13616 / ISO 7064 mod 97-10: remove spaces, move the first four characters (country code and check digits) to the end, replace each letter with a number (A = 10 … Z = 35) and divide the resulting number by 97. The IBAN is valid only if the remainder is 1.
Does a valid IBAN mean the account exists?
No. A passing check only proves the number is well-formed and has no typing errors the checksum can catch. It does not confirm that the account is open or who owns it; only the bank can confirm that.
How long is an IBAN?
It depends on the country, from 15 characters in Norway to 32 in Saint Lucia (33 in Russia). Germany uses 22, the UK 22, France 27, Spain 24 and the Netherlands 18. The tool checks the exact length for each country.
What are the IBAN check digits?
They are the two digits after the country code. They are computed as 98 minus the remainder of (BBAN + country code + 00, converted to numbers) divided by 97, so any single wrong character and almost all swapped adjacent characters are detected.
What is the BBAN?
The Basic Bank Account Number is the domestic part after the first four characters. Its structure is set nationally, for example an 8-digit bank code plus 10-digit account number in Germany, or a 4-letter bank code, 6-digit sort code and 8-digit account number in the UK.
Is IBAN the same as SWIFT/BIC?
No. The IBAN identifies an individual account, while the BIC (SWIFT code) identifies the bank. International transfers often need both.
Is it safe to paste my IBAN here?
Yes. The check runs entirely in your browser and nothing is sent to a server or stored.
Are all the tools on FreeToolCabin tested for quality and accuracy?
Yes! Every tool on our site undergoes automated Q/A testing in real browser environments to ensure high precision, correct output, and zero errors. If you happen to spot a bug or have a suggestion, please contact us at [email protected] and our team will review it right away.
