Pool Volume Calculator
Work out how much water your pool holds in US gallons and liters. Pick the shape, enter the size and either a single depth or the shallow and deep ends, and get the fill time and an approximate chlorine dose too.
A garden hose typically delivers 5–10 gal/min (20–40 L/min).
How to use the Pool Volume Calculator
- Pick the pool shape and choose feet or meters.
- Enter the length and width (or diameter for a round pool; both end widths for a kidney pool).
- Enter the depth: one depth, or the shallow and deep end depths for a sloped floor.
- Read the volume in gallons and liters, plus water weight and surface area.
- Optionally enter a fill rate and a chlorine target to estimate fill time and chemical dose.
Pool volume formulas
- Rectangle: length × width × average depth
- Round: π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × average depth
- Oval: π × (length ÷ 2) × (width ÷ 2) × average depth
- Kidney: 0.45 × (A + B) × length × average depth (A and B are the widths of the two ends)
- Average depth = (shallow end + deep end) ÷ 2
- Gallons = cubic feet × 7.48; liters = cubic meters × 1,000
Common pool sizes
| Pool | Average depth | US gallons | Liters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Round 15 ft above-ground | 4.33 ft (52 in) | 5,724 | 21,667 |
| Round 18 ft above-ground | 4.33 ft | 8,242 | 31,201 |
| Round 24 ft above-ground | 4.33 ft | 14,653 | 55,468 |
| Oval 15 × 30 ft | 4.33 ft | 11,448 | 43,335 |
| Rectangle 16 × 32 ft | 5.5 ft | 21,065 | 79,740 |
| Rectangle 20 × 40 ft | 5.5 ft | 32,914 | 124,594 |
Chlorine amounts are estimates based on the available chlorine in each product. Test your water, add chemicals with the pump running, and follow the manufacturer's label.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate pool volume in gallons?
Multiply the surface area by the average depth to get cubic feet, then multiply by 7.48 gallons per cubic foot. A 32 × 16 ft pool that is 3.5 ft at the shallow end and 8 ft at the deep end averages 5.75 ft: 32 × 16 × 5.75 = 2,944 ft³ × 7.48 ≈ 22,020 gallons.
How do I find the average depth of a sloped pool?
Add the shallow end depth and the deep end depth and divide by 2. This works well for a floor that slopes evenly. For a hopper-shaped deep end, measure each section separately for more accuracy.
How do I measure a kidney-shaped pool?
Measure the overall length (L), the width at the widest point of the larger end (A) and at the widest point of the smaller end (B). The common estimate is 0.45 × (A + B) × L × average depth.
How many gallons is an above-ground pool?
Use the round formula: π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × water depth × 7.48. A 24 ft round pool with 52 inches (4.33 ft) of water holds about 14,650 gallons.
How much chlorine raises free chlorine by 1 ppm?
For 10,000 gallons, about 10–11 fl oz of 12.5% liquid chlorine, about 2 oz of 65% cal-hypo, or about 1.5 oz of 90% trichlor. The calculator scales this to your pool. Always follow the product label and test the water.
How do I convert gallons to liters?
Multiply US gallons by 3.785. One cubic meter is 1,000 liters, or about 264.2 US gallons.
