Ring Light
Turn your laptop, tablet or phone screen into a soft ring light or full-screen fill light with adjustable color temperature, color and brightness. Everything runs in your browser and the screen stays awake while the light is on.
Tip: set your device's own brightness to maximum for the strongest light. Shortcuts in light mode: ↑/↓ brightness, ←/→ temperature, Esc turn off.
How to use the Ring Light
- Pick a mode: Ring for a bright circle around a dark center, or Fill to light the whole screen.
- Set the color with the temperature slider or a preset such as Daylight 5600 K, or switch to Custom color.
- Adjust brightness and, in ring mode, the ring thickness and size until the preview looks right.
- Press Turn on light. The light fills the screen and your display stays awake.
- Tap or click the light to show the controls again; press Turn off or Esc to exit.
Color temperature reference
Color temperature describes how warm (orange) or cool (blue) white light looks, measured in kelvin (K). The values below are typical for common light sources, together with the screen color this tool produces for each temperature.
| Temperature | Looks like | Screen color (RGB) | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2000 K | Candle flame, sunrise | #FF890E | Moody, very warm portraits |
| 2700 K | Household warm-white bulb | #FFA757 | Cosy evening calls in a warm room |
| 3200 K | Studio tungsten lamp | #FFB87B | Matching halogen or warm room lights |
| 4000 K | Neutral white LED, office | #FFCEA6 | Balanced look under mixed lighting |
| 5600 K | Daylight, camera flash | #FFEFE1 | Natural skin tones on video calls |
| 6500 K | Overcast sky, standard sRGB white point | #FFFEFA | Clean, slightly cool white |
| 8000 K+ | Shade, blue sky | #DDE6FF | Cool, crisp or "tech" looks |
How to get the best light from your screen
- Max out the hardware brightness. The browser can only make pixels as bright as your display allows, so turn your device brightness to 100% and disable auto-brightness or battery saver.
- Use a second device. A tablet or phone placed just beside or behind your webcam lights your face from the front while your main screen stays free for the call.
- Get close. Light falls off with the square of distance: halving the distance between screen and face gives roughly four times as much light.
- Match the room. If a warm ceiling lamp is on, choose 3000 to 3500 K so your face does not look blue on one side and orange on the other. In daylight, use 5000 to 6000 K.
- Ring or fill? Ring mode gives the familiar round catchlight in the eyes and works well on big screens. Fill mode uses every pixel and gives the most light from a small phone.
- Reduce other glare. Turn off strong lights behind you; a bright window behind your head makes the camera darken your face.
How the kelvin to RGB conversion works
Real light sources are compared with an ideal "black body" that glows at a given temperature. This tool converts kelvin to a screen color with Tanner Helland's curve fit of black-body colors: for temperatures up to 6600 K red is fixed at 255, green is 99.47 × ln(T/100) − 161.12 and blue is 138.52 × ln(T/100 − 10) − 305.04; above 6600 K blue is 255 while red and green fall gradually. The result is a close visual match, though every screen renders colors slightly differently. Brightness simply scales the red, green and blue values. If you mainly need a plain white or colored light, the Screen Flashlight is a simpler option, and the Webcam Test lets you check the effect on your camera.
Frequently asked questions
Does a screen ring light actually work for video calls?
Yes, for close-range lighting. A bright laptop or tablet screen a short distance from your face noticeably brightens and evens out your skin tones on webcam, especially in a dim room. It cannot match a real LED ring light in power, so turn your device's own brightness up to the maximum and sit close.
What color temperature should I use?
Around 5000 to 5600 K looks like natural daylight and is the safest choice for video calls. 3000 to 4000 K gives a warmer, cosier look that suits evening calls and warm room lights, while 6500 K and above looks cooler and bluer.
Can I use my phone as a ring light while I use my laptop camera?
Yes. Open this page on your phone or tablet, choose Ring or Fill mode and press Turn on light, then prop the device next to your laptop pointing at your face. Using a second device is the best setup because your laptop screen stays free for the call.
Why does the screen not go fully fullscreen on my iPhone?
iPhone Safari does not allow web pages to use the Fullscreen API on most elements. The light still covers the whole page; for a cleaner look add the page to your home screen or hide the browser bars by scrolling.
Will my screen turn off while the light is on?
On browsers that support the Screen Wake Lock API (Chrome, Edge, Safari 16.4+ and most modern mobile browsers) the screen stays on while the light is shown. If your browser does not support it, increase the screen timeout in your device settings.
How is color temperature converted to a screen color?
The tool uses Tanner Helland's widely used approximation of the color of a black-body radiator, which turns a temperature in kelvin into red, green and blue values. 6600 K comes out as pure white, lower values add orange and higher values add blue.
