Press Start black screen to fill your whole display with pure black (#000000). The cursor hides, the screen can stay awake, and Esc or the auto-exit timer brings you back.

  • Cleaning: black shows dust and streaks best. Wipe with a dry microfiber cloth, no spray on the panel.
  • OLED: pure black pixels are fully off, so the screen looks switched off but stays awake.
  • LCD: in a dark room, look at the edges for backlight bleed or glow.

How to use the Black Screen

  1. Pick a shade: pure black for OLED and cleaning, or a near-black gray to check backlight bleed.
  2. Choose options: hide the cursor, keep the screen awake and, if you like, an auto-exit timer.
  3. Press Start black screen. The page goes black and tries to enter full screen.
  4. Click or press F to switch full screen on or off. On a phone, tap to show the Exit and Full screen buttons.
  5. Press Esc (or double-click, or tap Exit) to return. The timer, if set, exits for you.

What a black screen is useful for

Cleaning the screenPure blackDust, fingerprints and streaks stand out against black. Wipe in straight lines with a dry microfiber cloth; lightly dampen it with distilled water for stubborn spots.
OLED "off" lookPure blackOLED pixels showing #000000 emit no light, so a phone or TV looks switched off while the system stays awake (for example during a long download or a presentation pause).
Checking backlight bleed or IPS glowPure black, then Near blackDarken the room, set brightness to about 50% and look straight at the screen from normal distance. Bright patches at the edges are bleed; glow that shifts as you move your head is IPS glow.
Finding bright (stuck) pixelsPure blackA pixel that stays lit on black is stuck or hot. Use the Dead Pixel Test to check every primary color.

OLED versus LCD black

An OLED (or micro-LED) display lights every pixel on its own. Pure black means the pixel is off, which gives an effectively infinite contrast ratio and saves power: a mostly black OLED screen uses noticeably less energy than a white one. Any value above zero, even #040404, turns the pixel back on at a very low level.

An LCD panel (IPS, VA or TN) has a backlight that is always on behind liquid crystals that try to block it. Black is the darkest the crystals can get, so it looks dark gray in a dark room. Typical native contrast is around 1000:1 for IPS and 3000:1 or more for VA panels. Screens with mini-LED or full-array local dimming can switch backlight zones off, but bright objects may show a halo.

Keyboard and touch controls

  • F or a single click: enter or leave the browser's full screen.
  • Esc or a double-click: close the black screen.
  • Touch screens: tap once to show Exit and Full screen buttons; they hide again after a few seconds.
  • Moving the mouse shows the cursor briefly, then it hides again if Hide the mouse cursor is on.

Frequently asked questions

Does a black screen turn off the pixels on an OLED display?

Yes. On OLED and micro-LED screens each pixel makes its own light, so pure black (#000000) pixels are switched off and draw almost no power. On LCD screens the backlight stays on behind the black image, so black looks dark gray in a dark room and saves little power.

Is a black screen good for cleaning my monitor?

Yes. Dust, smudges and streaks are much easier to see against black. Turn the screen off or show this page, wipe gently with a dry microfiber cloth, and use a cloth slightly dampened with distilled water for stubborn marks. Never spray liquid directly on the screen.

Why does the black look gray or glow at the edges?

That is an LCD backlight showing through, called backlight bleed or IPS glow. It is normal to some degree on LCD panels and is most visible in a dark room at high brightness. Use the near-black options here to judge how even the glow is.

Will my computer go to sleep while the black screen is showing?

If Keep screen awake is ticked and your browser supports the Screen Wake Lock API (Chrome, Edge, Safari 16.4 and later), the display will not time out while the page is visible. Otherwise your normal sleep settings apply.

Why didn't it go full screen?

Browsers only allow full screen after a click or key press, and some (such as Safari on iPhone) do not allow it for web pages at all. The black overlay still covers the whole page; on iPhone you can add the page to your Home Screen for a borderless view.

How do I exit the black screen?

Press Esc on a keyboard, double-click anywhere, or tap the screen and press Exit. If you set a timer, the black screen closes itself when the time is up. When the browser's own full screen is active, the first Esc leaves full screen and closes the black screen at the same time.

Can a black screen fix screen burn-in?

No. Showing black only rests the pixels; it does not reverse burn-in. Image retention (temporary ghosting) on LCDs often fades with time or a cycling pattern, which is what the Screen Burn-in Fixer is for.
