How to use the Area Converter
- Type an area into any unit box, for example 1,500 in Square feet or 2 in Hectares.
- Read the headline for the usual pairing (ft² ⇄ m², acres ⇄ hectares), with all other units below.
- Look at the comparison panel to picture the size against a court, field or park.
- Check the formula to see how the squared length factor gives the answer.
- Download a table, for example square feet to square meters in steps of 100.
Why area factors are squared
An area is a length times a length, so converting it means converting both sides. If 1 ft = 0.3048 m, then 1 ft² = 0.3048 m × 0.3048 m = 0.09290304 m². The same rule explains 144 in² per ft², 9 ft² per yd² and 1,000,000 m² per km². Acres and hectares are named land units: a hectare is a 100 m square, and an acre is 43,560 ft² (historically 1 furlong × 1 chain).
The converter stores each unit in square meters and computes result = value × m² per source unit ÷ m² per target unit.

| 1 square mile | 2.589988 km² ≈ 258.999 ha | 640 acres |
| 1 square meter | 10,000 cm² | 10.7639 ft² |
| 1 hectare | 10,000 m² (100 m × 100 m) | 2.47105 acres |
| 1 square kilometer | 100 ha | 0.386102 mi² ≈ 247.105 acres |
Comparison sizes used
- Tennis court (doubles): 23.77 m × 10.97 m = 260.76 m² (2,806.7 ft²).
- NBA basketball court: 94 ft × 50 ft = 4,700 ft² (436.6 m²).
- US football field: 360 ft × 160 ft including end zones = 57,600 ft² (1.32 acres).
- Soccer pitch: 105 m × 68 m, the size FIFA recommends for international matches (7,140 m², about 1.76 acres).
- Central Park: 843 acres (3.41 km²).

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert square feet to square meters?
Multiply by 0.09290304. A foot is 0.3048 m, so a square foot is 0.3048² = 0.09290304 m². For example, 1,000 ft² = 92.903 m². To go back, multiply square meters by 10.7639.
Why can’t I use the length factor for area?
Area has two dimensions, so the factor must be squared. 1 yard is 3 feet, but 1 square yard is 3 × 3 = 9 square feet. Likewise 1 m² is 10,000 cm², not 100.
How many square feet are in an acre?
Exactly 43,560 square feet, or 4,046.8564224 m². An acre is roughly 75% of an American football field including the end zones.
What is the difference between an acre and a hectare?
A hectare is 10,000 m² (a 100 m square). It equals about 2.47105 acres, so one acre is about 0.404686 hectares.
How many acres are in a square mile?
Exactly 640 acres, which is about 2.59 km² or 259 hectares. A square mile was the standard “section” in the US public land survey.
How big is 1,000 square feet?
About 92.9 m², or a square roughly 31.6 ft (9.6 m) on each side. That is around a third of a doubles tennis court (2,806.7 ft²).
Is a square kilometer the same as 1,000 square meters?
No. A square kilometer is 1,000 m × 1,000 m = 1,000,000 m², or 100 hectares.
