Click to plot ordered pairs, connect them into segments and polygons, and read each point's quadrant, each segment's length and slope, and each polygon's perimeter and area. Switch to a single quadrant or print blank coordinate planes for worksheets.

How to use the Coordinate Plane Plotter
Choose a tool: Point, Segment, Polygon, Move or Erase.
Click the grid to plot. In Segment mode click two points; in Polygon mode click each vertex and click the first one again (or press Finish polygon).
Or type coordinates such as A(2, 5) B(-4, 1) C(3, -3) and press Plot points, Plot as path or Plot as polygon.
Read the results under the grid: quadrant of each point, segment length, midpoint and slope, polygon perimeter and area.
Save or print: Download PNG, Print graph, or Print blank planes for a worksheet.
Coordinate plane basics
A coordinate plane (also called the Cartesian plane or x-y plane) is formed by a horizontal number line, the x-axis, and a vertical number line, the y-axis, crossing at the origin (0, 0). Every point is named by an ordered pair (x, y): x tells how far to move left or right, y how far to move up or down. Order matters: (3, −2) and (−2, 3) are different points.
Mystery picture: type a list of points and press Plot as path to reveal a shape, then ask students to plot it by hand on a printed blank plane.
Transformations: plot a triangle, then plot its reflection by changing the sign of x or y, or translate it by adding the same amount to every coordinate. Compare areas: they stay the same.
Quadrant I only is ideal for younger students and for real-world maps and tables where values are never negative.
Check right triangles: draw the three sides as segments and confirm that the squared lengths satisfy a² + b² = c².
Frequently asked questions
What are the four quadrants of a coordinate plane?
The x-axis and y-axis split the plane into four quadrants numbered counterclockwise from the upper right. Quadrant I has x > 0 and y > 0, Quadrant II has x < 0 and y > 0, Quadrant III has both negative, and Quadrant IV has x > 0 and y < 0. Points on an axis are not in any quadrant.
How do I plot an ordered pair?
Start at the origin (0, 0). Move along the x-axis by the first number, right if positive and left if negative, then move up or down by the second number. For (−4, 1) go 4 left and 1 up. You can also type the pair and press Plot points to place it exactly.
How is the distance between two points calculated?
The length of a segment from (x₁, y₁) to (x₂, y₂) uses the distance formula d = √((x₂ − x₁)² + (y₂ − y₁)²), which comes from the Pythagorean theorem. The tool shows the decimal value and, when the sum of squares is a whole number, the exact √ form.
How does the tool find the area of a polygon?
It uses the shoelace formula: list the vertices in order, add up xᵢ·yᵢ₊₁ − xᵢ₊₁·yᵢ around the shape and take half of the absolute value. This works for any simple polygon whose sides don't cross, whether the vertices go clockwise or counterclockwise.
Can I print a blank coordinate plane?
Yes. Set the view (all four quadrants or one quadrant), the axis range and whether you want axis numbers, choose 1, 2, 4 or 6 planes per page and press Print blank planes. In the print dialog you can also choose Save as PDF.
Can I plot points with decimals or fractions?
Yes. Set Snap to halves, quarters, tenths or Off before clicking, or type decimal coordinates such as (2.5, −1.75). Fractions should be typed as decimals.
Is my graph saved?
Your points, segments, polygons and settings are stored in your browser's local storage, so they are still there when you come back on the same device. Nothing is uploaded.
Are all the tools on FreeToolCabin tested for quality and accuracy?
Yes! Every tool on our site undergoes automated Q/A testing in real browser environments to ensure high precision, correct output, and zero errors. If you happen to spot a bug or have a suggestion, please contact us at [email protected] and our team will review it right away.
