Regular Polygon Calculator
Pick the number of sides and enter any one measurement (side length, apothem, circumradius, perimeter or area) to get everything else about a regular polygon: area, perimeter, side, apothem, circumradius, interior and exterior angles and the number of diagonals, with a drawing.
How to use the Regular Polygon Calculator
- Enter the number of sides (6 for a hexagon, 8 for an octagon…).
- Choose what you know: side, apothem, circumradius, perimeter or area.
- Enter the value and an optional length unit.
- Read the area and all other measurements.
- Compare with other polygons in the table, or copy the results.
Regular polygon formulas
| Quantity | Formula (n sides, side s) |
|---|---|
| Perimeter | P = n × s |
| Apothem (inradius) | a = s ÷ (2 tan(180°/n)) |
| Circumradius | R = s ÷ (2 sin(180°/n)) |
| Area | A = ½ P a = n s² ÷ (4 tan(180°/n)) = ½ n R² sin(360°/n) |
| Interior angle | (n − 2) × 180° ÷ n |
| Exterior (and central) angle | 360° ÷ n |
| Diagonals | n(n − 3) ÷ 2 |

For side length s, multiply the apothem and circumradius by s and the area by s².
Frequently asked questions
How do I find the area of a regular polygon?
Area = ½ × perimeter × apothem, or with only the side length s and number of sides n: A = n·s² ÷ (4·tan(180°/n)). A regular hexagon with 10 cm sides has an area of about 259.81 cm².
How do I calculate the interior angle of a regular polygon?
Each interior angle is (n − 2) × 180° ÷ n. A pentagon's interior angles are 108°, a hexagon's 120° and an octagon's 135°. The sum of all interior angles is (n − 2) × 180°.
What is the exterior angle of a regular polygon?
Each exterior angle is 360° ÷ n, and the exterior angles of any convex polygon add up to 360°. The exterior and interior angles at a vertex add up to 180°.
What is the apothem?
The apothem a is the distance from the center to the midpoint of a side, which is also the radius of the inscribed circle: a = s ÷ (2·tan(180°/n)). The circumradius R, from the center to a vertex, is s ÷ (2·sin(180°/n)).
How many diagonals does a polygon have?
A polygon with n sides has n(n − 3) ÷ 2 diagonals. A pentagon has 5, a hexagon 9 and an octagon 20.
Is a hexagon's side equal to its radius?
Yes. In a regular hexagon the circumradius equals the side length, because the hexagon is made of six equilateral triangles. That is why its area is (3√3 ÷ 2) × s² ≈ 2.598 s².
