How to use the Decimal Feet to Feet and Inches Converter
- Type the decimal feet, e.g. 5.75, or tap an example.
- Pick the fraction precision: 1/16″ matches most tape measures.
- Read the result in feet and inches, with total inches and metric below it.
- Going the other way? Choose Feet & inches → decimal feet and enter feet, inches and an optional fraction.
- Copy the results or download the inches-to-decimal-feet table.
How to convert decimal feet to feet and inches
Site plans, survey notes, laser measures and spreadsheets often give lengths in decimal feet (5.75 ft), while tape measures read in feet, inches and fractions (5′ 9″). Converting is a three-step process:
- Keep the whole feet. In 12.34 ft the whole part is 12 feet.
- Multiply the decimal part by 12 to get inches: 0.34 × 12 = 4.08″.
- Turn the decimal inches into a fraction: 0.08 × 16 = 1.28 → 1/16″. So 12.34 ft ≈ 12′ 4 1/16″.
The reverse is just as simple: decimal feet = feet + inches ÷ 12. For 6′ 2 1/2″: 2.5 ÷ 12 = 0.2083, so the length is 6.2083 ft.
Watch the carry: 7.999 ft is 7′ 11.988″, which rounds to 12″ at 1/16 precision, so the answer is 8′ 0″, not 7′ 12″. The converter handles this automatically.

Tips for construction and surveying
- Engineer's (decimal) scales and many surveying instruments read in tenths and hundredths of a foot. A tenth of a foot is 1.2″, and a hundredth is about 1/8″ (0.12″).
- Handy memory points: 0.25 ft = 3″, 0.5 ft = 6″, 0.75 ft = 9″, 0.083 ft ≈ 1″, 0.0833 ft per inch.
- Keep extra decimal places when converting stacked measurements, and only round to a fraction at the end, so the error does not add up.
- For layout work, 1/16″ is usually enough; finish carpentry and cabinet work may need 1/32″.
- US survey feet and international feet differ by about 2 parts per million (the survey foot was retired in 2023). That only matters over very long distances.
Frequently asked questions
How do you convert decimal feet to feet and inches?
Keep the whole feet, multiply the decimal part by 12 to get inches, then round the leftover decimal inches to a fraction. 5.75 ft: 0.75 × 12 = 9, so 5.75 ft = 5′ 9″.
What is 0.1 feet in inches?
0.1 ft × 12 = 1.2 inches, which is about 1 3/16 inches to the nearest sixteenth.
How do I convert feet and inches to decimal feet?
Divide the inches by 12 and add the feet. 6′ 2 1/2″ = 6 + 2.5 ÷ 12 = 6.2083 ft.
What is 12.34 feet in feet and inches?
0.34 × 12 = 4.08 inches, so 12.34 ft is 12′ 4.08″, or 12′ 4 1/16″ to the nearest sixteenth of an inch.
Why do surveyors use decimal feet?
Decimal feet are easier to add, subtract and multiply than feet-inch-fraction values, so survey instruments, levels and engineering plans usually record tenths and hundredths of a foot.
How many decimal feet is 1 inch?
1 inch = 1/12 ft = 0.08333 ft. Handy values: 3″ = 0.25 ft, 6″ = 0.5 ft and 9″ = 0.75 ft.
