Pixels to Inches Converter
Convert between pixels and inches, centimeters, millimeters or points at any DPI, check how large an image will print, work out the pixels you need for a print, or calculate a screen's pixel density.
How to use the Pixels to Inches Converter
- Pick a tab: unit converter, print size, pixels needed or screen PPI.
- Enter your values, such as a pixel count and a DPI, or a screen resolution and diagonal.
- Press the button (results also update as you type).
- Read the results in every unit, and the print quality hint for images.
- Press Copy to share the result.
Pixel, inch and DPI formulas
- Inches = pixels ÷ DPI, and pixels = inches × DPI.
- Centimeters = pixels ÷ DPI × 2.54, and millimeters = pixels ÷ DPI × 25.4.
- Points = inches × 72. At 72 PPI one pixel equals one point.
- Screen PPI = √(width² + height²) ÷ diagonal, and dot pitch (mm) = 25.4 ÷ PPI.
Example: a 3000 × 2000 pixel photo printed at 300 DPI is 3000 ÷ 300 = 10 in by 2000 ÷ 300 = 6.67 in (25.4 × 16.93 cm).

| 11 × 14 in | 3300 × 4200 (13.9 MP) | 2200 × 2800 | 1650 × 2100 |
| 16 × 20 in | 4800 × 6000 (28.8 MP) | 3200 × 4000 | 2400 × 3000 |
Why 96? CSS defines one inch as exactly 96 CSS pixels, which is also the Windows default. High-density screens map each CSS pixel to 2 or 3 physical pixels, so physical PPI is often much higher.
Frequently asked questions
How many pixels are in an inch?
It depends on the resolution. At 96 PPI (the CSS and Windows standard) one inch is 96 pixels, at 72 PPI it is 72 pixels, and for 300 DPI printing it is 300 pixels.
How do I convert pixels to inches?
Divide the number of pixels by the DPI or PPI. A 1200 pixel wide image printed at 300 DPI is 1200 ÷ 300 = 4 inches wide. Multiply by 2.54 for centimeters.
What is the difference between DPI and PPI?
PPI (pixels per inch) describes images and screens, while DPI (dots per inch) describes printers. In everyday use they are treated the same when working out print sizes.
What resolution do I need for an 8 × 10 print?
At 300 DPI an 8 × 10 inch print needs 2400 × 3000 pixels (7.2 megapixels). At 200 DPI, which is still acceptable for many photos, it needs 1600 × 2000 pixels.
How is screen PPI calculated?
PPI = √(width² + height²) ÷ diagonal in inches. A 24 inch monitor at 1920 × 1080 has √(1920² + 1080²) ≈ 2203 pixels on the diagonal, so 2203 ÷ 24 ≈ 91.8 PPI.
Does changing DPI change the image?
No. The pixel dimensions stay the same, and DPI is only metadata telling software how large to print it. To get a sharper print at a larger size you need more pixels.
