Steps to KM Converter
Turn a step count from your phone or pedometer into kilometers. The step length is estimated from your height and sex, or you can enter a measured step, and you can switch between walking and running because running steps are much longer.

How to use the Steps to KM Converter
- Enter your step count, for example 10,000.
- Choose walking or running; running uses a longer step.
- Give your height (and sex for walking) or choose Custom and type a measured step length.
- Read the kilometers, miles, steps per km and estimated time.
- Check the tables for other step counts and the steps needed for 5 km, 10 km and more.
How steps are converted to kilometers
A pedometer or phone counts steps, not distance. To turn steps into kilometers you multiply by your step length, the distance from one heel strike to the next foot's heel strike:
km = steps × step length (cm) ÷ 100,000
Example: 10,000 steps with a 70 cm step = 700,000 cm = 7.0 km (4.35 miles). The same 10,000 steps with an 80 cm step is 8.0 km, so step length matters more than anything else.
Estimating step length from height
- Walking: a widely used pedometer rule of thumb is step length ≈ height × 0.413 for women and × 0.415 for men.
- Running: steps get much longer as you speed up. This tool uses about height × 0.6 for easy running, a rough middle value for jogging; faster running takes noticeably longer steps.
- Best accuracy: measure it. Walk or jog 20 normal steps on a track or a measured path, measure the distance and divide by 20, then choose Custom.
10,000 steps in km by height
| Height | Walking, female (×0.413) | Walking, male (×0.415) | Easy running (×0.6) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 150 cm (4′ 11″) | 61.9 cm → 6.19 km | 62.2 cm → 6.22 km | 90 cm → 9.0 km |
| 155 cm (5′ 1″) | 64.0 cm → 6.40 km | 64.3 cm → 6.43 km | 93 cm → 9.3 km |
| 160 cm (5′ 3″) | 66.1 cm → 6.61 km | 66.4 cm → 6.64 km | 96 cm → 9.6 km |
| 165 cm (5′ 5″) | 68.1 cm → 6.81 km | 68.5 cm → 6.85 km | 99 cm → 9.9 km |
| 170 cm (5′ 7″) | 70.2 cm → 7.02 km | 70.5 cm → 7.05 km | 102 cm → 10.2 km |
| 175 cm (5′ 9″) | 72.3 cm → 7.23 km | 72.6 cm → 7.26 km | 105 cm → 10.5 km |
| 180 cm (5′ 11″) | 74.3 cm → 7.43 km | 74.7 cm → 7.47 km | 108 cm → 10.8 km |
| 185 cm (6′ 1″) | 76.4 cm → 7.64 km | 76.8 cm → 7.68 km | 111 cm → 11.1 km |
| 190 cm (6′ 3″) | 78.5 cm → 7.85 km | 78.8 cm → 7.88 km | 114 cm → 11.4 km |
Each cell shows the estimated step length and the distance covered by 10,000 steps. These are estimates; your measured step length always wins.
Tips for more accurate step distances
- Phones and watches often let you enter your own step or stride length; use the value you measured here so their distance matches.
- "Stride" sometimes means two steps (left plus right). If a running app reports a 1.6 m stride, your step length is about 0.8 m.
- Steps get shorter uphill, on stairs, in crowds and when carrying loads, so long hikes often cover less ground than the estimate.
- Counting steps on a treadmill? Compare the treadmill's distance with the step count to work out your real step length.
Frequently asked questions
How many km is 10,000 steps?
About 7 to 8 km for most adults when walking. With a 70 cm step it is 7.0 km; with a 76 cm step it is 7.6 km. Taller people and runners cover more distance.
How many steps are in 1 km?
Roughly 1,250 to 1,500 walking steps for most adults. Divide 100,000 by your step length in cm: with a 70 cm step, 1 km is about 1,429 steps.
How do I convert steps to km?
Multiply the steps by your step length in centimeters and divide by 100,000. 8,000 steps × 72 cm ÷ 100,000 = 5.76 km.
How is step length estimated from height?
A common pedometer rule of thumb is height × 0.413 for women and × 0.415 for men when walking. For easy running this tool uses about height × 0.6, because running steps are much longer and vary with speed.
How do I measure my own step length?
Walk 20 normal steps on a measured path or track, measure the total distance and divide by 20. Repeat once or twice and average. Do the same at your running pace for running steps.
Is a step the same as a stride?
Not always. A step is one foot to the other; in running and gait analysis a stride often means two steps (back to the same foot). This tool uses single steps, which is what phones and pedometers count.
