Drone Flight Time Calculator
Estimate how many minutes your drone can fly on one battery. Enter the pack capacity, cell count and usable discharge, then either the average current draw or the takeoff weight and hover efficiency, and get the flight time, power, energy and a table of what-if scenarios.

How to use the Drone Flight Time Calculator
- Enter the battery: capacity in mAh, cell count and chemistry (or a custom voltage).
- Set the usable discharge: 80% keeps a LiPo pack healthy.
- Enter the average current from your flight logs or OSD, or switch to the weight-based estimate.
- For an estimate, enter the total takeoff weight, hover efficiency and flying style.
- Read the flight time and compare scenarios in the table and chart.
Flight time formulas
| Quantity | Formula |
|---|---|
| Flight time (min) | t = (mAh ÷ 1000) × discharge ÷ I × 60 |
| Battery energy (Wh) | E = (mAh ÷ 1000) × V |
| Hover power (W) | P = weight (g) ÷ efficiency (g/W) |
| Average current (A) | I = P ÷ V |
| Max battery current (A) | Imax = C rating × capacity (Ah) |

Tips for longer flights
- Measure, don't guess: after a few flights, divide the mAh your charger put back in by the minutes flown to get your real average current.
- Weight is the biggest factor. Every extra gram must be lifted continuously, so lighter frames, cameras and mounts pay off.
- Bigger, slower props are usually more efficient than small, fast ones for the same thrust.
- Cold weather reduces LiPo capacity and voltage under load; keep packs warm before flying.
- Wind and aggressive flying can easily double the current compared with a calm hover, so plan with a margin.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate drone flight time?
Flight time (minutes) = battery capacity (Ah) × usable discharge ÷ average current (A) × 60. A 5000 mAh pack used to 80% at an average of 15 A gives 5 × 0.8 ÷ 15 × 60 = 16 minutes.
How do I find my drone's average current draw?
The most accurate source is a flight controller log or an OSD with a current sensor: divide the mAh consumed by the flight time in hours. Without one, estimate it from the takeoff weight and the hover efficiency of your motors and propellers (grams of thrust per watt).
Why only use 80% of a LiPo battery?
Discharging a LiPo pack below roughly 3.5 V per cell under load shortens its life and can damage it. Planning on 80% of the rated capacity leaves a safety reserve for landing and helps the pack last more cycles.
What is hover efficiency in g/W?
It is how many grams of thrust the motors and props produce per watt of electrical power at hover. Small racing quads with high-pitch props often manage about 3 to 5 g/W, while camera and long-range drones with large, slow props can reach 6 to 10 g/W or more.
Does a bigger battery always mean longer flights?
Not always. A bigger pack adds weight, which raises the power needed to hover. Past a certain size the extra weight cancels out the added capacity. The capacity chart here ignores the weight change, so treat larger sizes as an upper limit.
Can I take drone batteries on a plane?
Under common US and international airline rules, spare lithium batteries go in carry-on baggage only. Packs up to 100 Wh are generally allowed; 100 to 160 Wh need airline approval; larger ones are generally not allowed. Always check your airline's current rules.
