Pace and speed formulas
Speed (km/h) = 60 ÷ pace (min/km)
Speed (mph) = 60 ÷ pace (min/mile)
Pace (min/km) = 60 ÷ speed (km/h); pace (min/mile) = 60 ÷ speed (mph)
Pace per mile = pace per km × 1.609344; 1 mph = 1.609344 km/h
Example: 5:30 per km = 5.5 minutes → 60 ÷ 5.5 = 10.91 km/h = 6.78 mph, which is 8:51 per mile.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert pace to speed?
Divide 60 by the pace in minutes. A pace of 5:00 per km is 60 ÷ 5 = 12 km/h. For 8:00 per mile, 60 ÷ 8 = 7.5 mph. Convert seconds to a decimal first: 5:30 = 5.5 minutes, so 60 ÷ 5.5 = 10.91 km/h.
How do I convert speed to pace?
Divide 60 by the speed. At 10 km/h the pace is 60 ÷ 10 = 6 minutes per km; at 6 mph it is 60 ÷ 6 = 10 minutes per mile.
How do I convert min/km to min/mile?
Multiply the pace per km by 1.609344. 5:00 per km × 1.609344 = 8:03 per mile. To go the other way, divide pace per mile by 1.609344.
What treadmill speed is a 10-minute mile?
6.0 mph (9.66 km/h). An 8-minute mile is 7.5 mph, a 9-minute mile 6.67 mph and a 12-minute mile 5.0 mph.
Why does treadmill pace feel easier than outside?
There is no air resistance and the belt helps with leg turnover, so many runners set the incline to 1% to better match the effort of running outdoors.
What is a good running pace?
It depends on age, fitness and distance. Many recreational runners run easy miles around 9:00–12:00 per mile (5:35–7:27 per km); brisk walking is roughly 3–4 mph (15:00–20:00 per mile).
