RAR vs 7z vs ZIP
ZIP is the most compatible format: every modern operating system opens it without extra software, but it compresses less. RAR is a proprietary format from WinRAR with good compression, recovery records and solid archives. 7z is open source and usually compresses best, often 10 to 40 percent smaller than ZIP for documents and program files. Already compressed files such as JPEG photos, MP3s and videos barely shrink in any format.
A solid RAR or 7z archive compresses all files as one stream. That makes it smaller, but to get a single file near the end, the extractor has to decompress everything before it. If downloading single files is slow, use Extract all as ZIP: it reads the archive once.
How it works
This page runs libarchive, the same open-source extraction library used by many operating systems, compiled to WebAssembly so it runs at near-native speed in your browser. The archive is read from your disk into memory, decompressed in a background worker so the page stays responsive, and every file you extract is handed straight to your downloads folder. No server ever sees the archive, its file names or its password.
Multi-part archives (name.part1.rar, name.7z.001) are not supported. Recombine them with the desktop app that made them, or ask the sender for a single archive. If you need to create an archive instead, use the ZIP File Creator.
Frequently asked questions
How do I open a RAR file without WinRAR?
Drop the RAR file on this page. It is opened in your browser with libarchive, an open-source extraction library compiled to WebAssembly, so you do not need WinRAR, 7-Zip or any other software. You can then download single files or everything as a ZIP.
Can I extract 7z files online for free?
Yes. This tool opens 7z archives, including ones made with LZMA2 compression, for free and without limits on the number of files. Everything runs locally, so even large archives are not uploaded anywhere.
Does it support RAR5 archives?
Yes. Both the older RAR 4 format and RAR5, the default in WinRAR 5 and later, can be opened. Multi-part archives split into .part1.rar, .part2.rar and so on are not supported, so join them first or extract them with desktop software.
How do I open a password-protected RAR or 7z file?
When an archive is encrypted, the tool asks for the password. Type it and press Unlock and Extract. The password is used only in your browser to decrypt the files. Without the correct password the contents cannot be extracted.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The archive is read and decompressed on your own device by your browser. Nothing is sent over the internet, which keeps private files private.
Why convert a RAR to ZIP?
ZIP files open natively on Windows, macOS, iPhone, Android and Chromebooks, while RAR and 7z need extra apps. Extract all as ZIP gives you the same files and folders in a format everyone can open.
Is there a size limit?
There is no fixed limit, but the archive and the extracted files are held in your device's memory. Archives up to a few hundred megabytes work well on most computers; very large files may be slow or fail on phones.
