Ideas for using an LED scrolling sign
| Occasion | Example message | Suggested settings |
|---|---|---|
| Concert or festival | PLAY OUR SONG! ❤️ | Rainbow or pink, glow on, speed 6–7 |
| Airport or station pickup | WELCOME, ALEX! | Static or slow scroll, yellow or white text, size 80% |
| Sports game | GO TEAM GO! | Team colors, LED dots on, speed 7–8 |
| Birthday surprise | HAPPY BIRTHDAY! 🎂 | Rainbow, slow blink, speed 5 |
| Ride pickup at night | TAXI or your name | Static, bright white or green, size 90% |
| Quiet room or study | QUIET PLEASE | Static, red on black, glow off |
How the scroll speed works
The speed setting is relative to the sign's height, so a message moves at the same apparent pace on a phone, a tablet or a TV. At speed 5 the text moves about 0.77 screen heights per second; each step adds 0.13 screen heights per second. Long messages are easier to read at speeds 3–5, because each word stays on screen longer; one or two words can scroll faster.
Tips for a bright, readable sign
- Raise the brightness to maximum and turn off auto-brightness for dark venues.
- Use capital letters and few words. Two to four words are easiest to read from a distance.
- Pick high contrast: yellow, white, red or green text on a black background shows up best.
- Turn off Glow on very small screens if the letters look blurry.
- Be considerate: avoid fast blinking near people's faces and follow the venue's rules about holding up screens.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make scrolling text on my phone?
Open this page on your phone, type your message, choose the colors and speed, and tap Start fullscreen. The message scrolls across the full screen like an LED sign. Turn the phone sideways for the biggest letters.
Does it work in landscape mode?
Yes. With Landscape on phones turned on, the tool asks the browser to lock the screen to landscape in fullscreen. Browsers that do not allow locking (such as Safari on iPhone) get the text rotated 90 degrees instead, so you simply hold the phone sideways.
Will my screen turn off while the sign is showing?
On browsers that support the Screen Wake Lock API (most recent Chrome, Edge and Safari versions), the screen stays on while the sign is in fullscreen. If your phone still dims, increase the auto-lock time in your phone's display settings.
What settings are easiest to read from far away?
Short messages in capital letters, large text size (70–95%), a bright color like yellow, red or white on a black background, and a medium speed. Fewer words scroll by faster, so the crowd can read them before they disappear.
Can I use emojis in the scrolling text?
Yes. Emojis are drawn by your device's emoji font, so they appear in their own colors. Keep in mind that the LED dot effect also applies to emojis.
Is the blink effect safe for everyone?
Rapid flashing can be uncomfortable and may trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. Blink is off by default; use the slow speed if you need it and avoid pointing a fast-blinking screen at people up close.
Is my message sent anywhere?
No. The sign is drawn entirely in your browser. Your message is only stored in this browser so it is there next time, or placed in the share link if you choose to copy it.
