What makes a strong value proposition
- Specific customer. “Freelance designers” beats “businesses”. The narrower the audience, the sharper the message.
- Outcome, not feature. Say what changes for the customer (“get paid on time”), then mention the feature that makes it happen (“automatic reminders”).
- Real difference. The “Unlike…” clause should name something a competitor cannot easily claim. “Better quality” and “great service” are not differences.
- Customer language. Reuse the words customers use in reviews, support tickets and interviews. This also helps the canvas fit check match pains to relievers.
- Proof. A number, a named result or a recognised customer makes the claim believable. Only use figures you can back up.
Using the Value Proposition Canvas
- Start with the customer profile. List the jobs they are trying to get done, the pains that annoy them before, during and after, and the gains they hope for.
- Rank them. Put the most severe pains and most wanted gains at the top of each list.
- Build the value map. For each important pain write a matching pain reliever; for each gain, a gain creator. List the products and services that deliver them.
- Check the fit. Any pain or gain marked ✗ in the fit table is either an opportunity to improve the product or a gap in how you describe it.
- Test with real customers before committing: interviews and simple landing page tests show which statement resonates.
Frequently asked questions
What is a value proposition?
A value proposition is a short, clear statement of the benefit a specific customer gets from your product and why they should choose it over the alternatives. It focuses on the customer's problem and result, not on a list of features.
What is the Geoffrey Moore positioning statement template?
From the book Crossing the Chasm, the template reads: For [target customer] who [statement of need], [product name] is a [product category] that [key benefit]. Unlike [primary competitive alternative], our product [primary differentiation]. It is an internal tool for alignment that you can then turn into public-facing copy.
What is the difference between a value proposition and a slogan?
A value proposition explains who you serve, the problem you solve and why you are different, usually in one to three sentences. A slogan is a short, memorable phrase for brand recall that may not explain the benefit at all.
What is the Value Proposition Canvas?
The canvas, popularised by Strategyzer, puts a customer profile (jobs, pains and gains) next to a value map (products and services, pain relievers and gain creators). You have a good fit when your pain relievers and gain creators address the pains and gains that matter most to the customer.
How does the fit check work?
For each pain and gain you list, the tool looks for a pain reliever or gain creator that shares a key word. It is a quick consistency check: a missing match shows a customer need that your offer does not yet speak to, or that you describe in different words.
How long should a value proposition be?
The headline version should be readable in a few seconds, usually under about 10 to 15 words, backed by a one-sentence subheadline and two to four benefit bullets. The positioning statement can be longer because it is meant for your team.
