Gratitude Journal
Take two minutes a day to write down three things you are grateful for. A fresh prompt helps when you are stuck, your streak and a 12-week calendar keep you going, and every entry is searchable. Your journal is saved only in this browser: no account, no cloud, nobody else can read it.

How to use the Gratitude Journal
- Read today's prompt (or press Shuffle prompt for another) to get your thoughts going.
- Write three things you are grateful for. Specific beats general: "my neighbor shoveled my walk" rather than "neighbors".
- Add a mood or a note if you like. Entries save automatically; Save entry confirms it.
- Come back tomorrow to grow your streak. Use the arrows or tap a day on the calendar to fill in a day you missed.
- Search, export or back up: type a word to find past entries, then download TXT or PDF, print, or save a JSON backup you can restore on another device.
How to keep a gratitude journal that sticks
- Pick a fixed moment. Tie it to something you already do every day, such as your morning coffee or just before bed. The same time each day makes it automatic.
- Be specific. "The bus driver who waited for me" is more vivid than "people are nice". Specific details are easier to feel and to remember later.
- Add the why. One short clause on why something mattered ("…so I wasn't late for my interview") turns a list into a reflection.
- Look for new things. Repeating "family, health, home" every day gets stale. The daily prompt nudges you toward fresh angles: people, places, small pleasures, lessons and progress.
- Don't force it on hard days. One honest item is better than three empty ones. Use the mood and note fields to say how the day really went.
- Reread now and then. Searching past entries for a person, a place or a word like "laughed" is a quick way to remember good moments you had forgotten.
Prompt themes
| Theme | Example prompt | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| People | Who made your day a little easier today, and how? | Shifts attention to support and connection you might overlook. |
| Small pleasures | Which sound, smell or texture made you feel good today? | Trains you to notice ordinary moments. |
| Everyday comforts | What is something you use every day that you would miss if it were gone? | Counters taking routine things for granted. |
| Growth | What is a skill you have today that you did not have a year ago? | Highlights progress that is easy to miss day to day. |
| Hard times | What is a problem that turned out better than you expected? | Finds something useful even in difficult events. |
| Looking ahead | What is something you are looking forward to? | Ends the entry on anticipation rather than worry. |
Privacy and backups
This journal works entirely in your browser. Entries are kept in local storage on this device, so they are as private as your device itself: anyone who can open this browser profile could read them. On a shared computer, use your own browser profile. Because nothing is stored online, a JSON backup is the only way to recover your journal after clearing site data or moving to a new device, so download one every few weeks.
A gratitude journal can support well-being but is not a substitute for professional help. If you are struggling, consider talking to someone you trust or a health professional.
Frequently asked questions
Where are my journal entries stored?
Only in your browser's local storage on this device. Nothing is sent to a server, there is no account, and we cannot see or recover your entries. Clearing your browser data, using a private window, or switching browsers or devices will not carry them over, so download a JSON backup now and then and use Restore backup to bring them back.
Why write three things every day?
The "three good things" exercise, popularized by positive psychology researchers such as Martin Seligman, asks you to note three things that went well and why. Three is enough to look past the obvious first answer but quick enough to keep up daily. Studies of gratitude journaling have linked it with modest improvements in well-being, though results vary from person to person; it is a helpful habit, not a treatment.
How is the streak counted?
The streak is the number of days in a row, ending today, that have at least one gratitude item. If you have not written today yet, the streak counted up to yesterday stays alive until midnight. Entries with only a mood or note do not count toward the streak. The longest streak is the longest run of consecutive days in all your entries.
Can I add an entry for a day I missed?
Yes. Use the arrows, the date picker or tap a square on the 12-week calendar to open any past day and write the entry. Filling in a missed day also repairs your streak. Future dates are not allowed.
What is the difference between the PDF, Print and TXT exports?
TXT is a plain text file that keeps every character, including emoji and non-Latin scripts. PDF creates a tidy letter-size document using the standard Helvetica font, which covers English and Western European languages; characters outside that set show as "?". Print opens your browser's print dialog with a clean layout, where you can also choose Save as PDF and keep every character.
How do I move my journal to another browser or phone?
Press Back up (JSON) to download a backup file, open this page on the other device or browser, and use Restore backup to load it. Restoring merges entries: new days are added, and if the same day exists in both, the most recently edited version is kept.
What should I do when I can't think of anything?
Use the prompt, or think small and concrete: a meal you enjoyed, a message from someone, a moment of quiet, something that went smoothly. Writing why it mattered to you, not just what it was, tends to make the exercise more meaningful.
