How to use the Volume Converter
Choose US customary or UK imperial at the top. It changes gallons, quarts, pints, cups, fluid ounces and spoons.
Type a volume into any box, for example 2 in Liters or 3/4 in Cups.
Read the results: every unit updates, and the side panel shows the amount in the other system and as kitchen measures.
Check the working or click a common volume such as 330 mL or 1 gallon.
Download a table for any pair of units with your own start and step.
US customary vs UK imperial volume
The same names hide different sizes. The US gallon comes from the old 231 cubic-inch wine gallon; the imperial gallon was defined in 1824 as the volume of 10 pounds of water and is now exactly 4.54609 L. Everything built on the gallon (quarts, pints, fluid ounces) differs too:

The cup and spoons in UK mode are the metric kitchen measures (250 mL, 15 mL, 5 mL) found on modern UK measuring sets.
How volume conversion is calculated
Each unit is stored as an exact number of liters, and every conversion goes through liters: result = value × liters per source unit ÷ liters per target unit. Example: 5 US gal × 3.785411784 = 18.927 L, and 18.927 L ÷ 4.54609 = 4.163 UK gal.
Cubic units come from length cubed: 1 ft³ = (0.3048 m)³ = 0.028316846592 m³ = 28.3168 L, and 1 yd³ = 27 ft³ = 764.555 L. That is why a cubic yard of soil or concrete is about 202 US gallons.
Tips
Recipes from abroad: check whether a recipe is American (236.6 mL cup) or British/Australian (250 mL cup); the difference is about 6%.
Dry vs liquid: this converter measures volume only. To turn cups of flour into grams you need the ingredient’s density.
Fuel economy: UK mpg figures look higher than US ones because the imperial gallon is bigger.
Frequently asked questions
How many liters are in a gallon?
A US gallon is exactly 3.785411784 liters. A UK (imperial) gallon is exactly 4.54609 liters, about 20% larger. Use the switch at the top of the converter to pick which one you mean.
Why are US and UK pints different?
A US pint is 16 US fluid ounces (473.18 mL); an imperial pint is 20 imperial fluid ounces (568.26 mL). The imperial fluid ounce is also slightly smaller than the US one (28.41 vs 29.57 mL).
How many milliliters are in a cup?
A US customary cup is 236.59 mL (8 US fl oz). US nutrition labels use a 240 mL “legal cup”, and the UK, Australia and Canada use a 250 mL metric cup in recipes.
How many tablespoons are in a cup?
16 tablespoons make a US cup, and 3 teaspoons make a tablespoon (48 teaspoons per cup). A metric cup of 250 mL holds about 16.7 metric tablespoons of 15 mL.
How many gallons are in a cubic foot?
One cubic foot holds about 7.48052 US gallons (28.3168 L). This is useful for pools, aquariums and water tanks measured in feet.
Is a cubic centimeter the same as a milliliter?
Yes. 1 cm³ (cc) is exactly 1 mL, and 1,000 cm³ is 1 liter. A cubic meter is 1,000 liters.
Which tablespoon does the UK setting use?
The modern 15 mL metric tablespoon and 5 mL teaspoon used in UK recipes and measuring spoons, not the historic imperial tablespoon (about 17.76 mL).
