Calories Burned Walking Calculator
Find out how many calories a walk burns for your body weight. Enter distance and speed, time and speed, or distance and time, add an incline if you walk uphill or on a treadmill, and compare paces in the table.
Last updated:
Casual ≈ 2.5 mph, average ≈ 3 mph, brisk ≈ 3.5–4 mph
0 for flat ground; treadmill incline setting in %
How to use the Calories Burned Walking Calculator
- Enter your body weight in pounds or kilograms.
- Choose what you know: distance and speed, time and speed, or distance and time.
- Fill in the walk, using mph, km/h or a pace in minutes per mile.
- Add the incline in percent if you walked uphill or on an inclined treadmill.
- Read the calories and compare other speeds and inclines in the table and chart.
The ACSM walking equation
The calculator uses the metabolic equation for walking published in the American College of Sports Medicine's Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription:
- VO₂ (mL/kg/min) = 0.1 × S + 1.8 × S × G + 3.5, where S is speed in meters per minute (mph × 26.82) and G is the grade as a decimal (5% = 0.05).
- kcal per minute = VO₂ × body weight (kg) ÷ 1000 × 5
- METs = VO₂ ÷ 3.5
The three terms are the horizontal cost of moving your body, the vertical cost of lifting it uphill, and your resting metabolism. The equation is most accurate between about 1.9 and 3.7 mph (50–100 m/min) on firm ground or a treadmill. Walking on sand, snow or rough trails, or carrying a pack, costs more.
Calories burned walking 1 mile (flat, ACSM gross)
| Body weight | 2.5 mph | 3.0 mph | 3.5 mph | 3.0 mph, 5% incline |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 120 lb (54 kg) | 67 | 63 | 60 | 102 |
| 140 lb (64 kg) | 78 | 73 | 70 | 119 |
| 160 lb (73 kg) | 89 | 84 | 80 | 136 |
| 180 lb (82 kg) | 100 | 94 | 90 | 153 |
| 200 lb (91 kg) | 111 | 105 | 100 | 170 |
| 250 lb (113 kg) | 139 | 131 | 125 | 213 |
Gross calories include resting metabolism. Per mile, slower walking shows slightly more gross calories simply because the walk takes longer and resting burn keeps adding up.
Tips to burn more calories walking
- Add incline. Hills or a treadmill grade raise the cost far more than adding speed. The chart above the results shows the effect for your own walk.
- Walk longer rather than only faster. Total calories scale with time, so an extra 15 minutes usually beats a slightly quicker pace.
- Keep the handrails free. Holding treadmill rails takes weight off your legs and can cut the real burn well below the displayed estimate.
- Use net calories for food logs. Your daily calorie needs already include resting metabolism, so adding gross exercise calories counts that part twice.
Frequently asked questions
How many calories does walking a mile burn?
On flat ground most adults burn roughly 0.5–0.6 kcal per pound of body weight per mile when gross calories are counted. With the ACSM equation a 160 lb (72.6 kg) person walking 1 mile at 3 mph burns about 84 kcal, of which about 58 kcal is above resting metabolism. Speed matters less per mile than weight and incline do.
What formula does this calculator use?
The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) walking equation: VO₂ (mL/kg/min) = 0.1 × speed (m/min) + 1.8 × speed × grade + 3.5. Oxygen use is converted to energy at about 5 kcal per liter of oxygen: kcal/min = VO₂ × body weight (kg) ÷ 1000 × 5.
What is the difference between gross and net calories?
Gross calories include the energy your body would burn anyway at rest (1 MET, 3.5 mL/kg/min of oxygen). Net calories subtract that resting part and show only the extra energy caused by the walk, which is the better number when adding exercise to a food log.
How much does incline increase calories burned?
A lot. In the ACSM equation each 1% of grade adds 1.8 × speed to the oxygen cost. At 3 mph a 5% incline raises the burn by about 60% over flat ground, and a 10% incline more than doubles it.
Does walking faster burn more calories per mile?
Only somewhat. Per minute, faster walking burns clearly more, but you also finish sooner. Per mile the ACSM equation gives nearly the same calories at 2.5–3.5 mph. Above about 4 mph walking becomes inefficient and the real cost rises faster than the equation predicts, which the Compendium MET values reflect.
How accurate is a walking calorie estimate?
Equations like ACSM are typically within about 10–20% for most people. Fitness, body composition, terrain, carrying a load, wind and walking technique all change the real number. Fitness trackers have similar or larger errors.
What are METs?
A MET (metabolic equivalent) is the energy you use at rest, defined as 3.5 mL of oxygen per kg of body weight per minute, or about 1 kcal per kg per hour. Walking at 3 mph is about 3.3–3.5 METs, so it burns about 3.5 times your resting rate.
