Steps to Miles Calculator
Turn a step count into distance. Enter your steps and your height (or measured step length) to get miles, kilometers, steps per mile, walking time and an estimate of calories burned.

How to use the Steps to Miles Calculator
- Enter your step count from a pedometer, watch or phone.
- Choose how to get step length: estimate it from your height and sex, or enter a measured value.
- Pick your walking pace and optionally enter your weight for calories.
- Read the distance in miles and km, plus steps per mile and time.
- Check the table for other step counts or download it as CSV.
How steps convert to miles
The math is simple once you know your step length:
- Distance (inches) = steps × step length (inches)
- Miles = inches ÷ 63,360, and kilometers = miles × 1.609344
- Steps per mile = 63,360 ÷ step length (inches)
- Estimated step length = height × 0.415 (men) or × 0.413 (women)
Example: a man 5 ft 9 in tall (69 in) has an estimated step length of 69 × 0.415 = 28.6 in. 10,000 steps × 28.6 in = 286,350 in ÷ 63,360 = 4.52 miles (7.27 km).
Steps per mile by height
| Height | Step length (men / women) | Steps per mile (men / women) | 10,000 steps (men) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 ft 0 in (152 cm) | 24.9 / 24.8 in | 2,545 / 2,557 | 3.93 mi |
| 5 ft 4 in (163 cm) | 26.6 / 26.4 in | 2,386 / 2,397 | 4.19 mi |
| 5 ft 8 in (173 cm) | 28.2 / 28.1 in | 2,245 / 2,256 | 4.45 mi |
| 6 ft 0 in (183 cm) | 29.9 / 29.7 in | 2,120 / 2,131 | 4.72 mi |
| 6 ft 4 in (193 cm) | 31.5 / 31.4 in | 2,009 / 2,019 | 4.98 mi |
These are estimates from height. Your real step length changes with pace, terrain and footwear, and running steps are much longer than walking steps.

Frequently asked questions
How many steps are in a mile?
It depends on step length. A mile is 63,360 inches, so steps per mile = 63,360 ÷ step length in inches. With a 28-inch step that is about 2,263 steps; with a 30-inch step about 2,112. Most adults walk roughly 2,000 to 2,500 steps per mile.
How far is 10,000 steps?
For an average step length of about 2.3 to 2.5 feet, 10,000 steps is roughly 4.4 to 4.7 miles (7 to 7.6 km). Taller people with longer steps cover more distance with the same count.
How do you estimate step length from height?
A common rule of thumb is step length ≈ 0.415 × height for men and 0.413 × height for women. For someone 5 ft 9 in (69 in) that gives about 28.6 inches. Measuring your own step is more accurate.
How do I measure my step length?
Walk at your normal pace over a measured distance, count your steps, and divide the distance by the number of steps. For example, 20 meters in 27 steps gives a step length of about 74 cm. Repeat a few times and use the average.
Is step length the same as stride length?
Not strictly. In gait science a stride is two steps (left plus right). Many fitness trackers use 'stride length' to mean the length of one step, which is what this calculator uses.
How are the calories calculated?
Calories = MET × body weight in kg × hours. Walking at 3 mph is about 3.5 MET, 3.5 mph about 4.3 MET and 4 mph about 5.0 MET (Compendium of Physical Activities). Results are estimates; terrain, fitness and body composition change the real number.
