Average Calculator
Paste or type any list of numbers to find the average (mean) instantly, along with the median, mode, sum, count, minimum, maximum and range. Switch to weighted average for grades and scores.
Enter each value with its weight (for example a grade and its credit hours, or a score and its percentage of the final mark).
How to use the Average Calculator
- Paste or type your numbers in the box. Separate them with commas, spaces or new lines, or paste a column from a spreadsheet.
- Read the average at once, plus the median, mode, sum, count, min, max and range.
- Need a weighted average? Open the Weighted average tab and enter each value with its weight, such as a grade and its credits.
- Adjust the decimals or press Copy results to paste them somewhere else.
Average formulas
| Measure | Formula | Example for 2, 4, 4, 5, 10 |
|---|---|---|
| Mean (average) | Sum ÷ count | 25 ÷ 5 = 5 |
| Median | Middle value of the sorted list | 4 |
| Mode | Most frequent value | 4 |
| Range | Maximum − minimum | 10 − 2 = 8 |
| Weighted average | Σ(value × weight) ÷ Σ weights | – |
| Geometric mean | (x₁ × x₂ × … × xₙ)1/n | ≈ 4.37 |
Weighted average example: course grade
| Part | Score | Weight | Score × weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Homework | 92 | 20% | 18.4 |
| Midterm | 78 | 30% | 23.4 |
| Final exam | 85 | 50% | 42.5 |
| Total | 100% | 84.3 |
The weighted average is 84.3, while a plain average of the three scores would be 85. Weighting matters whenever some items count more than others.

Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate an average?
Add all the numbers together, then divide by how many numbers there are. For 4, 8 and 12 the sum is 24 and there are 3 numbers, so the average is 24 ÷ 3 = 8.
What is the difference between mean, median and mode?
The mean is the usual average (sum ÷ count). The median is the middle value when the numbers are sorted, which is less affected by very large or small values. The mode is the value that appears most often.
How do I calculate a weighted average?
Multiply each value by its weight, add the results, then divide by the total of the weights. For example, grades of 90 (3 credits) and 80 (1 credit) give (90×3 + 80×1) ÷ 4 = 87.5.
How do I find my grade average?
For a simple average of test scores, paste them into the Average tab. If assignments count for different amounts, use the Weighted average tab and enter each score with its percentage or points as the weight.
Can I paste numbers from Excel or Google Sheets?
Yes. Copy a column or row of cells and paste it into the box. The calculator splits on new lines, tabs, commas and spaces, and ignores symbols like $ and %.
What is the geometric mean?
It's the nth root of the product of n numbers, often used for growth rates and ratios. It only works when all the numbers are positive.
