Mean Median Mode Calculator
Paste or type a list of numbers to find the mean, median, mode and range, plus the minimum, maximum, count, sum, standard deviation and a sorted list. Every result shows how it was worked out.
Separate with commas, spaces or new lines. You can paste a column from a spreadsheet.
How to use the Mean Median Mode Calculator
- Paste or type your numbers, separated by commas, spaces or line breaks.
- Choose how many decimal places to show.
- Press Calculate (results also update as you type).
- Read the mean, median, mode and range with step-by-step working, the sorted list and the frequency table.
- Copy the results or download the frequency table as CSV.
Formulas for mean, median, mode and range
| Measure | How to calculate it | Example: 11, 9, 15, 11, 14, 20 |
|---|---|---|
| Mean | Σx ÷ n | 80 ÷ 6 = 13.33 |
| Median | Middle value of the sorted list (average the two middle values if n is even) | 9, 11, 11, 14, 15, 20 → (11 + 14) ÷ 2 = 12.5 |
| Mode | Most frequent value | 11 (appears twice) |
| Range | Maximum − minimum | 20 − 9 = 11 |
| Population variance | Σ(x − mean)² ÷ n | 77.33 ÷ 6 = 12.89 |
| Sample variance | Σ(x − mean)² ÷ (n − 1) | 77.33 ÷ 5 = 15.47 |
Which average should you use?
| Average | Best for | Weakness |
|---|---|---|
| Mean | Symmetric data without extreme values: test scores, heights, daily temperatures | Pulled strongly by outliers |
| Median | Skewed data: incomes, house prices, response times | Ignores how far the other values are from the middle |
| Mode | Categories or repeated values: shoe sizes, most common rating | May not exist or may not be unique |
Quartiles here use the common "median of halves" method (the median itself is left out of both halves when the count is odd). Spreadsheet functions such as QUARTILE.INC interpolate and can give slightly different values.
Frequently asked questions
How do you find the mean?
Add all the numbers and divide by how many there are. For 2, 4, 9: (2 + 4 + 9) ÷ 3 = 5. The mean is what most people call the average.
How do you find the median?
Sort the numbers from smallest to largest and take the middle one. If there is an even count, average the two middle values: the median of 3, 7, 8, 12 is (7 + 8) ÷ 2 = 7.5.
How do you find the mode?
The mode is the value that appears most often. A list can have one mode, several modes (bimodal or multimodal) or no mode at all when every value appears the same number of times.
How do you find the range?
Subtract the smallest value from the largest. For 4, 9, 15, 22 the range is 22 − 4 = 18. It is a quick measure of how spread out the data is.
When should I use the median instead of the mean?
Use the median when the data has outliers or is skewed, such as incomes or house prices. One very large value pulls the mean up a lot but barely moves the median.
What is the difference between sample and population standard deviation?
Population standard deviation divides the squared deviations by n and is used when you have every value. Sample standard deviation divides by n − 1 and is used when your numbers are a sample from a larger group.
Can I paste numbers from Excel or Google Sheets?
Yes. Copy a column or row and paste it into the box. Numbers separated by tabs, spaces, commas or new lines are all recognized; text such as headers is ignored and listed in the steps.
