Average Order Value Calculator
Enter your revenue and number of orders to get your average order value (AOV). Then test an AOV increase to see the extra revenue it would bring for the same number of orders, per period and per year.
E.g. from bundles, free-shipping threshold or upsells.
Adds units per order and average item price.
Adds conversion rate and revenue per visitor.
How to use the Average Order Value Calculator
- Enter total revenue and the number of orders for the same period.
- Pick the period so the tool can estimate the yearly impact.
- Enter an AOV increase to test, for example 10%.
- Optionally add items sold and visitors for units per order, conversion rate and revenue per visitor.
- Read the AOV and the impact table, and download it as CSV.
AOV formulas
- Average order value = total revenue ÷ number of orders
- Extra revenue from an AOV lift = AOV × lift % × orders
- Units per order = items sold ÷ orders; average item price = revenue ÷ items sold
- Revenue per visitor = revenue ÷ visitors = AOV × conversion rate
Example: $48,000 from 800 orders is an AOV of $60. A 10% lift to $66 adds $4,800 per month for the same orders. With 32,000 visitors, the conversion rate is 2.5% and revenue per visitor is $1.50.
Extra monthly revenue from an AOV increase
Assumes 1,000 orders per month.
| Current AOV | +5% | +10% | +15% | +20% |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $25 | $1,250 | $2,500 | $3,750 | $5,000 |
| $50 | $2,500 | $5,000 | $7,500 | $10,000 |
| $75 | $3,750 | $7,500 | $11,250 | $15,000 |
| $100 | $5,000 | $10,000 | $15,000 | $20,000 |
| $150 | $7,500 | $15,000 | $22,500 | $30,000 |
Tips to raise average order value
- Set a free-shipping threshold about 15% to 30% above your current AOV.
- Bundle complementary products at a small discount.
- Show relevant add-ons on the product page and in the cart.
- Offer tiered discounts ("buy 2, save 10%") and watch the effect on margin.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate average order value?
AOV = total revenue ÷ number of orders. $48,000 of sales from 800 orders gives an average order value of $60.
Should AOV include tax and shipping?
Most businesses calculate AOV from product revenue after discounts and exclude sales tax, because tax is not your revenue. Whether you include shipping fees is up to you; just be consistent so you can compare periods.
How much revenue does a higher AOV add?
Extra revenue = current AOV × increase % × number of orders. With an AOV of $60 and 800 orders a month, a 10% increase adds $4,800 a month, or $57,600 a year if order volume stays the same.
What are common ways to increase AOV?
Product bundles, a free-shipping threshold slightly above your current AOV, volume discounts, cross-sells at checkout, upsells to a better version, and gift-with-purchase offers are common tactics. Test them, because discounts can lower margin even as AOV rises.
What is the difference between AOV and revenue per visitor?
AOV looks only at people who bought. Revenue per visitor spreads revenue across all visitors, so it equals AOV × conversion rate. It is useful for comparing changes that affect both how many people buy and how much they spend.
Is AOV the same as average transaction value or basket size?
Yes, in practice these terms usually mean the same thing: average revenue per order or transaction. Units per transaction is different; it counts items, not money.
