Boat loan formula with a worked example
Lenders use the standard amortization formula: M = P × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)−n), where M is the monthly payment, P is the amount financed, r is the monthly rate (APR ÷ 12 ÷ 100) and n is the number of monthly payments. The amount financed is the price plus sales tax and any fees you roll into the loan, minus your down payment and trade-in equity.
Example: a $40,000 boat with 10% down ($4,000), 6% sales tax ($2,400) and $800 of documentation and registration fees rolled into the loan, at 8.5% APR for 120 months. The amount financed is 40,000 + 2,400 + 800 − 4,000 = $39,200.00. The monthly rate is 8.5 ÷ 12 ÷ 100 = 0.007083, so M = 39,200.00 × 0.007083 ÷ (1 − 1.007083−120) = $486.02 a month. Over 120 payments you pay $58,322.87, of which $19,122.87 is interest.
Typical boat loan terms
Boat loans usually run longer than car loans because boats cost more and are expected to last longer. Smaller loans, such as for a used fishing boat or personal watercraft, are often written for a few years, while larger loans on new boats, pontoons and cruisers are commonly offered with terms of 10, 15 or even 20 years. Lenders typically set the maximum term by the amount borrowed and the age of the boat, and many ask for a down payment.
Rates vary by lender and depend on your credit history, the loan amount, the term, the age and type of boat and current market rates, so there is no single typical rate. Compare quotes from banks, credit unions and specialist marine lenders, and check whether the quoted rate is fixed or variable.

Multiply by the amount you plan to borrow in tens of thousands. Notice how a longer term lowers the payment but raises the total interest: at 7% APR, $10,000 costs about $1,881 in interest over 5 years but about $8,607 over 20 years.
Costs to budget for besides the loan
Insurance: lenders usually require it while the boat is financed.
Registration, title and taxes: these depend on your state or country; some places also charge annual property tax on boats.
Storage or slip fees, winterizing and maintenance.
Trailer, safety equipment and fuel, which you can estimate with the boat fuel calculator.
These figures are estimates for planning only and are not a loan offer or financial advice. Your lender's numbers can differ slightly because of daily interest, the first payment date, rounding and optional add-ons.
Frequently asked questions
How is a boat loan payment calculated?
Boat loans use the standard amortization formula M = P × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)^−n), where P is the amount financed, r is the APR ÷ 12 ÷ 100 and n is the number of months. For example, $20,000 at 7% APR over 60 months is $396.02 a month.
How long can you finance a boat?
Terms depend on the lender, the loan amount and the age of the boat. Smaller loans are often a few years, while larger loans on newer boats are commonly offered for 10 to 20 years. This calculator supports any term up to 30 years.
What is the amount financed on a boat loan?
It is the boat price plus sales tax and any fees you roll into the loan, minus your down payment and trade-in equity. If you owe more on a trade-in than it is worth, the difference is added to the loan.
Is a longer boat loan term better?
A longer term lowers the monthly payment but increases the total interest a lot. The compare-terms table shows the payment and total interest for each term at your rate so you can see the trade-off.
What interest rate will I get on a boat loan?
Rates vary by lender and depend on your credit history, the loan amount, the term, the type and age of the boat and current market rates. Get quotes from several banks, credit unions or marine lenders and enter the APR you are offered.
Does this include insurance, storage or maintenance?
No. The calculator covers the loan only. Budget separately for insurance, registration, storage or slip fees, maintenance and fuel.
