How to use the 0% APR Payoff Calculator
Enter the amount financed at 0%, the promo length in months and the purchase date.
Choose the offer type: deferred interest (store cards, "no interest if paid in full") or a true 0% intro APR.
Enter the APR after the promo from your agreement.
Enter the payment you plan to make and how many months early you want to finish.
Press Calculate payoff plan to see the payment needed, the deadline and what underpaying would cost.
How the payoff plan is calculated
Payment needed = balance ÷ promo months, rounded up to the cent
With a safety margin = balance ÷ (promo months − months early)
Deferred interest = sum of (balance each month × APR ÷ 12) from the purchase date, charged only if a balance remains at the deadline
After the promo, interest = balance × APR ÷ 12 each month until paid off
Example: $2,400 for 12 months with deferred interest at 29.99%. Paying $150 a month leaves $600 at the deadline, so about $472 of back-dated interest is added and the purchase ends up costing roughly $3,000. Paying $200 a month costs exactly $2,400.

Tips to avoid deferred interest
Set up autopay for your calculated amount, not the statement minimum.
Write down the expiration date and set a reminder two months before it.
Finish a month early to absorb posting delays or a skipped payment.
Avoid new charges on the same promotional account.
If you can't finish in time, consider paying the remainder with savings or a lower-rate option before the deadline rather than after it.
Frequently asked questions
How much do I need to pay each month to clear a 0% balance?
Divide the balance by the number of months in the promotion and round up to the next cent. $2,400 over 12 months is $200 a month. To leave a safety margin, divide by one fewer month: $2,400 ÷ 11 = $218.19 finishes a month early.
What is deferred interest?
With deferred-interest financing, common on store cards and retail promotions advertised as "no interest if paid in full", interest is calculated from the purchase date but not charged. If any balance remains when the promo ends, all of that back-dated interest is added at once. If you pay in full in time, it is waived.
How is deferred interest different from a true 0% APR?
With a true 0% intro APR, interest starts only on the balance still owed after the promo ends. With deferred interest, missing the deadline by even a dollar triggers interest on the entire original balance for the whole promo period, which can add hundreds of dollars.
Is the minimum payment enough to pay off a 0% promo?
Often not. Minimum payments on promotional balances are frequently set too low to clear the balance in time. Always calculate your own payment as balance ÷ months left, and check that it is higher than the minimum shown on the statement.
When exactly does the promo end?
The expiration date is printed on each statement. Aim to have the balance at $0 on the statement that closes before that date. Building in a one-month cushion, as this calculator does by default, protects you from payment timing and posting delays.
What happens if I make other purchases on the same card?
Payments above the minimum generally go to the balance with the highest APR first, but rules for deferred-interest balances can differ, especially in the final two billing cycles. Keeping the promo balance on a card you don't use for anything else makes it easier to track.
