RV loan formula with a worked example
Lenders use the standard amortization formula: M = P × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)−n), where M is the monthly payment, P is the amount financed, r is the monthly rate (APR ÷ 12 ÷ 100) and n is the number of monthly payments. The amount financed is the price plus sales tax and any fees you roll into the loan, minus your down payment and trade-in equity.
Example: a $60,000 travel trailer or motorhome with 10% down ($6,000), 6% sales tax ($3,600) and $1,000 of dealer and documentation fees rolled into the loan, at 8% APR for 180 months. The amount financed is 60,000 + 3,600 + 1,000 − 6,000 = $58,600.00. The monthly rate is 8 ÷ 12 ÷ 100 = 0.006667, so M = 58,600.00 × 0.006667 ÷ (1 − 1.006667−180) = $560.01 a month. Over 180 payments you pay $100,802.18, of which $42,202.18 is interest.
Adding $100 a month to that payment pays the loan off after 135 payments instead of 180 (3 years and 9 months sooner) and saves about $11,775 in interest. Use the extra payment field to test your own amount.
How long are RV loans?
RV and camper loans often have longer terms than car loans. Smaller loans on used trailers may be limited to a few years, while larger loans on new motorhomes and fifth wheels are commonly offered for 10 to 20 years. The longest terms are usually reserved for larger loan amounts and newer RVs. Rates vary by lender and depend on your credit, the loan amount, the term and the age of the RV, so compare quotes from several lenders before you buy.

Why extra payments save so much on long RV loans
On a long loan most of each early payment goes to interest. Any extra amount goes straight to principal, so the balance falls faster and every later payment carries less interest. Before paying extra, check that your loan has no prepayment penalty and ask the lender to apply the extra money to principal.
These figures are estimates for planning only and are not a loan offer or financial advice. Your lender's numbers can differ slightly because of daily interest, the first payment date, rounding and optional add-ons.
Frequently asked questions
How is an RV loan payment calculated?
RV loans use the standard amortization formula M = P × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)^−n), where P is the amount financed, r is the APR ÷ 12 ÷ 100 and n is the number of months. For example, $20,000 at 7% APR over 60 months is $396.02 a month.
How long can you finance an RV?
It depends on the lender, the loan amount and the age of the RV. Smaller loans on used campers are often a few years, while larger loans on newer motorhomes and fifth wheels are commonly offered for 10 to 20 years.
How much do extra payments save on an RV loan?
Extra payments go straight to principal, so less interest builds up each month. Enter an amount in the extra payment field to see the interest saved, the months saved and the new payoff date for your loan.
What is included in the amount financed?
The RV price plus sales tax and any fees rolled into the loan, minus your down payment and trade-in equity. Negative equity on a trade-in is added to the loan.
What rate will I get on an RV loan?
Rates vary by lender and depend on your credit, the loan amount, the term, whether the RV is new or used and current market rates. Compare offers from banks, credit unions and RV lenders and enter the APR you are quoted.
Can I pay off an RV loan early?
Many RV loans allow early payoff, but some have prepayment penalties. Check your loan agreement and ask the lender to apply extra payments to principal.
