How to use the Carry-On Luggage Size Checker
- Choose carry-on or personal item and your units.
- Measure the packed bag including wheels, handles and outside pockets.
- Enter height, width, depth and, if you know it, the packed weight.
- Pick a region to narrow the airline list, or keep all airlines.
- See which airlines it fits and what is over the limit for the rest, then confirm with your airline.
How the size check works
A bag fits an airline's sizer when each of its sides is no larger than the matching side of the limit. Because you can turn a bag any way, the checker sorts your three measurements from largest to smallest and does the same with the airline's limit, then compares longest to longest, middle to middle and shortest to shortest. A few airlines, such as Singapore Airlines and Air New Zealand, use a linear total instead: length + width + depth must not exceed the limit (115 or 118 cm). If you enter a weight, it is compared with the airline's published weight limit.
Common cabin bag sizes
| Size | Inches | Centimeters | Who uses it (examples) |
|---|---|---|---|
| US standard carry-on | 22 × 14 × 9 | 56 × 36 × 23 | American, Delta, United, Alaska, JetBlue |
| Larger carry-on | 24 × 16 × 10 | 61 × 41 × 25 | Southwest, Frontier |
| International cabin bag | 21.7 × 15.7 × 9.1 | 55 × 40 × 23 | Air Canada, Lufthansa, Turkish, Wizz Air (priority) |
| Narrow cabin bag | 21.7 × 13.8 × 9.8 | 55 × 35 × 25 | Air France, KLM |
| Large personal item | 18 × 14 × 8 | 46 × 36 × 20 | American, Spirit |
| Small under-seat bag | 15.7 × 11.8 × 7.9 | 40 × 30 × 20 | Wizz Air free bag; similar at many European airlines |
Tips to avoid gate-check fees
- Measure the packed bag with a tape measure, wheels and handles included. Soft-sided bags give a little; hard shells do not.
- Skip the expansion zipper unless you know the bag still fits; expanded depth is the most common reason a 22-inch bag fails the sizer.
- Weigh it at home with a luggage scale or bathroom scale (weigh yourself holding the bag, then subtract), especially on airlines with 7-10 kg limits.
- Check every airline on your trip. A connection on a different or low-cost airline can have a smaller limit than your main flight.
- Read your fare rules. Basic economy and low-cost fares often allow only a personal item unless you pay for a carry-on.
Frequently asked questions
What size is a standard carry-on?
In the US, the most common carry-on limit is 22 × 14 × 9 inches (about 56 × 36 × 23 cm), used by American, Delta, United, Alaska and JetBlue. Many European and Asian airlines use about 55 × 40 × 23 cm or slightly smaller, often with a weight limit of 7-10 kg.
Do wheels and handles count in carry-on size?
Yes. Airlines measure the whole bag as it would go into the sizer, including wheels, handles, feet and outside pockets. Measure it packed, because an expanded or overstuffed bag can be deeper than the label size.
What is the difference between a carry-on and a personal item?
A carry-on goes in the overhead bin and is usually up to about 22 × 14 × 9 inches. A personal item, such as a backpack, laptop bag or purse, must fit under the seat in front of you, so it is smaller, often around 17 × 13 × 8 inches or 40 × 30 × 15 cm.
Do US airlines have carry-on weight limits?
Most major US airlines, including American, Delta, United and Southwest, do not publish a weight limit for carry-ons on domestic flights, although you must be able to lift the bag into the bin yourself. Some carriers do, for example Frontier at 35 lb and Hawaiian at 25 lb, and many international airlines limit cabin bags to 7-12 kg.
Does it matter which side I call height or width?
No. The checker sorts your bag's sides and each airline's limits from largest to smallest and compares them pairwise, which is how a bag is fitted into a sizer. A bag 9 × 14 × 22 is treated the same as 22 × 14 × 9.
Can I bring a carry-on with a basic economy ticket?
It depends on the airline. Some basic fares, such as United Basic Economy and JetBlue Blue Basic on most routes, allow only a personal item, and low-cost airlines like Spirit, Frontier, Ryanair and Wizz Air charge for a full-size carry-on. Check your fare rules when booking.
Are these limits up to date?
They reflect the airlines' published cabin baggage policies as compiled in 2026. Airlines change sizes, weights and fare rules, and some routes or aircraft differ, so always confirm on the airline's own website before you fly.
