How to use the Packing List Generator

  1. Pick a trip type: beach, city break, business, hiking / camping, ski or family with kids.
  2. Set the trip length in days and tick the expected weather: hot, cold and/or rain.
  3. Choose extras such as laundry available, international trip or flying.
  4. Press Generate packing list and tick items off as they go into your bag. Remove items you don't need and add your own.
  5. Print the checklist or copy it as text. Your list and ticks are saved in this browser for next time.

How the quantities are worked out

Clothing is calculated from the number of days you need clothes for. Without laundry that is the full trip length; with laundry it is capped at 7 days. Call that number C.

ItemRule3 days7 days14 days + laundry
UnderwearC + 1 spare488
SocksC + 1 spare488
Tops / T-shirts1 per day377

Sleepwear1 per 4 days, rounded up122
Swimsuits (beach)2 from 3 days222
Meals (camping)3 per trip day92142
Hand warmers (ski)1 pair per day3714

Kids' clothing uses C + 2 outfits per child, because children need changes more often. For babies, diapers are counted at 6 a day for up to 5 days; for longer trips it is usually easier to buy more at your destination.

Packing tips that save space

  • Wear your bulkiest items (boots, coat, ski jacket) on the journey instead of packing them.
  • Roll soft clothes and use packing cubes per category, matching the sections of this list, so you can find things fast.
  • Choose one colour palette so every top goes with every bottom; you then need fewer pieces.
  • Carry medicines, documents and chargers in your hand luggage, never in a checked bag.
  • Check airline liquid rules: in many countries carry-on liquids must be in containers of 100 ml or less inside one clear, resealable bag of about one litre.

Frequently asked questions

How many clothes should I pack for a week?

For 7 days pack about 8 pairs of underwear and socks (one per day plus a spare), 7 tops, 2 to 3 bottoms, 2 sets of sleepwear, plus one warm or rain layer depending on the weather. The generator works this out for any trip length.

How does the laundry option change the list?

With laundry available you only need clothes for up to 7 days, however long the trip is, because you can wash and rewear. Trip gear, meals and other non-clothing quantities still follow the full trip length.

What should every packing list include?

ID or passport, bank cards and some cash, tickets and booking confirmations, phone and charger, prescription medicines, a toothbrush and basic toiletries, and enough underwear and socks. These essentials are added for every trip type.

Is my packing list saved?

Yes. Your trip settings, ticked items, removed items and custom items are saved in your browser's local storage on this device. Nothing is uploaded, and the list is still there when you come back.

Can I print the checklist?

Yes. Press Print checklist and only the list is printed, in two columns with tick boxes, without the rest of the page. You can also choose Save as PDF in the print dialog.

How do I pack for a family trip with kids?

Choose Family with kids, enter the number of children and tick the baby option if you travel with a toddler in diapers. Kids' outfits, pajamas, shoes and toys are multiplied by the number of children, and extra outfits are added for spills.

Can I add things that are not on the list?

Yes. Type an item name, set the quantity, choose a category and press Add item. Custom items are marked as yours, stay when you change the trip settings, and can be removed with the × button.
