Drive vs Fly Calculator
Should you drive or fly? Enter the distance, your car's fuel economy and the airfare, and the calculator adds up every cost on both sides, from gas, tolls and hotels to bag fees, airport parking and a rental car, along with door-to-door travel time.

How to use the Drive vs Fly Calculator
- Enter the trip: one-way driving distance, number of travelers, trip length and whether it is a round trip.
- Enter your car: fuel economy, fuel price and optional wear cost, tolls and hotel price.
- Enter the flight: airfare per person, bag fees, airport parking and ground transport at your destination.
- Adjust airport times and, if you like, put a value on an hour of travel time.
- Press Compare costs to see which option is cheaper, by how much, and how long each takes.
How the comparison works
- Driving cost = fuel + wear per mile × miles + tolls + hotel nights × hotel price
- Fuel = miles ÷ MPG × price per gallon (or km × L/100 km ÷ 100 × price per liter)
- Driving time = distance ÷ average speed, plus a 15-minute break for every 2 hours at the wheel. A leg longer than your daily limit adds an overnight stop.
- Flying cost = airfare × travelers + bag fees × travelers × flights + parking × days + ground transport
- Flying time = to the airport + early arrival + flight + layovers + from the airport
- Break-even airfare = (driving cost − flying costs other than tickets) ÷ travelers, with time value included on both sides when set
Example with the defaults: a 600-mile round trip for two in a 28 MPG car at $3.50 per gallon uses 1,200 ÷ 28 = 42.9 gallons ($150) plus $120 of wear. Each leg is 10 hours at 60 mph plus 1 h 15 min of breaks, which is over a 10-hour driving day, so each way adds a $120 hotel night: driving costs $510. Flying costs two $280 fares ($560), four checked bags ($140), five days of parking ($100) and a $150 rental car: $950. Valuing time at $15 an hour per traveler narrows the gap to about $36 because driving takes 22.5 hours against about 9 hours door to door.
Rules of thumb
| Situation | Usually better | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Under about 300 miles (500 km) | Drive | Airport time cancels out the faster flight |
| Solo traveler, 500+ miles | Fly | One fare against the whole cost of the car |
| Family of 4 or more | Drive | Fuel is shared; tickets and bag fees multiply |
| Need a car at the destination | Drive | Rental cars and rides add up over several days |
| Long trip with overnight stops | Fly | Hotels, meals and lost days add to the drive |
Costs you would pay either way, such as meals at the destination or your accommodation there, are left out because they do not change the decision.
Frequently asked questions
Is it cheaper to drive or fly?
For one person, flying often wins on longer trips because a car's costs are similar whether it carries one person or five. For families or groups, driving usually becomes cheaper because fuel and tolls are shared while every traveler needs a ticket. The calculator shows the break-even airfare for your trip.
How is the cost of driving calculated?
Fuel = distance ÷ MPG × price per gallon (or distance × L/100 km ÷ 100 × price per liter). Add wear and maintenance per mile, tolls, and hotel nights if the drive is longer than your daily limit. Insurance and depreciation that you pay anyway are not included unless you add them to the wear figure.
How long does flying really take door to door?
Add travel to the airport, time at the airport before departure (often 1–2 hours for domestic flights), the flight itself, any layovers and getting from the arrival airport to your destination. For trips under about 300–400 miles, driving is often as fast as flying once all of that is counted.
How is flight time estimated?
If you leave flight time blank, the calculator assumes the air distance is about 85% of the road distance and adds half an hour for taxiing, climb and descent to a cruise of about 500 mph. Enter the scheduled time from your booking for a more accurate result.
What does value of time mean?
It puts a price on each hour spent traveling, per traveler, so a slower option is penalized. Use your hourly wage if you would otherwise work, a lower figure for leisure time, or 0 to compare money only.
What costs are easy to forget when flying?
Checked and carry-on bag fees, seat selection, airport parking or rides to the airport, and a rental car or rideshares at the destination. Driving has its own hidden costs: tires, oil changes and wear add up on long trips.
