How does the color matching work?
Your color and every named color are converted to the CIELAB color space, which is designed to match how people see color. The tool then measures the difference with the CIEDE2000 formula (ΔE) and picks the smallest one. That is why the match looks right to your eyes rather than just being numerically close in RGB. A ΔE below 1 is practically identical, below 3 is a very close match, and above 10 means the nearest name is only a rough description.
Where do the color names come from?
The list combines the 140+ standard CSS/HTML color names, the classic X11 color set, hundreds of common color names voted on by people in a large online color survey, and a curated set of everyday names from nature, food, gemstones, flowers and design, such as Sage, Terracotta, Matcha and Rose Gold. Duplicate names and identical shades have been removed so every entry is unique.
Frequently asked questions
What color is this HEX code?
Paste the HEX code into the HEX field above. The tool shows the closest color name, how close the match is, and the RGB and HSL values.
Is the color name finder free?
Yes. It's completely free with no sign-up. Everything runs in your browser.
Can I enter RGB values instead of HEX?
Yes. Type values into the R, G and B boxes, or paste a value such as rgb(255, 99, 71) into the HEX field and it will be recognised.
Why is the closest name not an exact match?
There are over 16 million possible RGB colors but only 1,547 names, so most colors fall between named colors. The match indicator tells you how close the nearest name is.
Can I pick a color from my screen or an image?
In Chrome, Edge and Opera, the "Pick from screen" button lets you sample any pixel on your screen. In other browsers, use the color picker or copy the HEX value from your design app.
Can I use the color names in CSS?
Only the standard CSS color names (like Tomato, SteelBlue or RebeccaPurple) work directly in CSS. For any other name, use the HEX or RGB value shown next to it.
