Each place is worth ten times the place to its right. That is why moving a digit one place to the left multiplies its value by 10, and one place to the right divides it by 10.
Frequently asked questions
What is expanded form?
Expanded form writes a number as the sum of the values of its digits. Each digit is multiplied by its place value: 4,529 = 4,000 + 500 + 20 + 9.
How do you write a decimal in expanded form?
Treat digits after the decimal point the same way, using tenths, hundredths and so on: 3.47 = 3 + 0.4 + 0.07, or with fractions (3 × 1) + (4 × 1/10) + (7 × 1/100).
What happens to zeros in expanded form?
Zero digits add nothing, so they are usually left out: 7,060 = 7,000 + 60. Some teachers ask for them anyway (7,000 + 0 + 60 + 0); tick Show zero digits for that style.
What is expanded form with exponents?
It writes each place value as a power of ten: 3,405 = (3 × 10³) + (4 × 10²) + (5 × 10⁰). Decimal places use negative exponents, so 0.6 = 6 × 10⁻¹.
What is the difference between expanded form, standard form and word form?
Standard form is the usual numeral (3,405.67). Expanded form splits it by place value (3,000 + 400 + 5 + 0.6 + 0.07). Word form spells it out: three thousand four hundred five and sixty-seven hundredths.
How do you say decimals in word form?
Read the whole-number part, say “and” for the decimal point, then read the decimal digits as a whole number followed by the place name of the last digit. So 12.305 is twelve and three hundred five thousandths.
Does the calculator round my number?
No. The number is processed digit by digit as text, so even long decimals like 0.000000000001 are shown exactly, without floating-point rounding.
