2-Stroke Oil Mix Calculator
Find exactly how much two-stroke oil to add to your gasoline (petrol) for any fuel-to-oil ratio, in US fluid ounces, millilitres or cc. You can also work backwards from a bottle of oil to the amount of fuel it mixes with.
Enter 45 for a 45:1 mix.
How to use the 2-Stroke Oil Mix Calculator
- Choose the ratio from your engine manual, for example 50:1, or pick Custom.
- Enter the fuel amount and its unit (US gallons, imperial gallons or litres).
- Press Calculate mix to see the oil needed in fluid ounces and millilitres.
- Have a bottle of oil? Switch to “Fuel for my oil” to see how much fuel it mixes with.
- Use the chart below the result for quick amounts at other ratios.
2-stroke mix formula
- Oil = fuel volume ÷ ratio (for a 50:1 mix, divide the fuel by 50)
- Fuel = oil volume × ratio
- 1 US gallon = 128 US fl oz = 3,785.41 ml · 1 imperial gallon = 4,546.09 ml · 1 US fl oz = 29.574 ml
Example: 2.5 US gallons at 40:1 → 2.5 × 128 ÷ 40 = 8 fl oz (about 237 ml) of oil.

Mixing tips
- Use fresh fuel and the oil type your manufacturer specifies (air-cooled 2-cycle oil for most garden tools, TC-W3 rated oil for water-cooled outboards).
- Pour about half the fuel into the can, add the full amount of oil, close and shake, then add the remaining fuel and shake again.
- Mix only what you will use within a few weeks; premixed fuel goes stale, so label the can with the ratio and date.
Frequently asked questions
How much oil do I mix with 1 gallon of gas at 50:1?
2.56 US fluid ounces (about 76 ml). The calculation is 128 fl oz in a US gallon ÷ 50 = 2.56 fl oz.
How much 2-stroke oil per litre at 50:1?
20 ml. One litre is 1,000 ml, and 1,000 ÷ 50 = 20 ml of oil. For 5 litres you need 100 ml.
What does a 40:1 ratio mean?
It means 40 parts of fuel to 1 part of oil by volume. One US gallon at 40:1 needs 3.2 fl oz (about 95 ml) of oil, and one litre needs 25 ml.
Is the ratio based on the fuel or the total mix?
The usual convention, used by engine makers and this calculator, is oil = fuel ÷ ratio, so a 50:1 mix is 50 parts of fuel plus 1 part of oil. The oil is therefore slightly less than 2% of the total mixture.
What happens if I use the wrong ratio?
Too little oil can cause poor lubrication and engine damage; too much oil tends to cause smoke, fouled spark plugs and carbon build-up. Always use the ratio in your equipment manual, which may differ from the ratio printed on an oil bottle.
Are US and imperial gallons different?
Yes. A US gallon is 3.785 litres (128 US fl oz) and an imperial gallon is 4.546 litres. At 50:1 an imperial gallon needs about 91 ml of oil, versus about 76 ml for a US gallon.
Is cc the same as ml?
Yes. One cubic centimetre (cc) equals one millilitre (ml), so oil measuring cups marked in cc and ml read the same.
