How to use the PSAT Score Calculator
Count your correct answers in each section of a full practice test (wrong answers are not subtracted).
Enter Reading and Writing out of 54 and Math out of 44.
Pick your grade to compare with the right benchmarks.
Optionally enter a Selection Index cutoff, such as a recent Commended or state Semifinalist cutoff.
Press Calculate score and use the what-if table to set a practice goal.
PSAT/NMSQT score formulas
Section scores: Reading and Writing 160–760, Math 160–760, in steps of 10.
Total score = Reading and Writing + Math, from 320 to 1520.
Selection Index = (2 × Reading and Writing + Math) ÷ 10, from 48 to 228. Reading and Writing counts double because the index originally combined separate reading, writing and math scores equally.

Tips to raise your Selection Index
Each Reading and Writing point counts twice in the index, so a 20-point RW gain moves the index by 4, while a 20-point Math gain moves it by 2.
Answer every question: there is no guessing penalty.
Take official full-length practice tests in the testing app so the adaptive modules match the real experience.
Review wrong answers by skill (grammar rules, vocabulary in context, algebra, data analysis) rather than just counting them.
Frequently asked questions
How is the PSAT scored?
The digital PSAT/NMSQT has two sections, Reading and Writing (54 questions) and Math (44 questions). Each section is scored from 160 to 760, so the total runs from 320 to 1520. There is no penalty for wrong answers, so only the number of correct answers and the difficulty of the questions matter.
How is the National Merit Selection Index calculated?
The Selection Index doubles the Reading and Writing score, adds the Math score and divides by 10: (2 × RW + Math) ÷ 10. For example, RW 690 and Math 700 give (1380 + 700) ÷ 10 = 208. The index ranges from 48 to 228.
Is this calculator exact?
No. The digital PSAT is adaptive: the second module of each section is easier or harder depending on how you did on the first, and each question has its own weight. Two students with the same number correct can get different scaled scores. This tool uses a smooth practice-test style conversion, so treat the result as an estimate within about ±30 points per section.
What is a good PSAT score?
College Board publishes readiness benchmarks: for 11th graders, 460 in Reading and Writing and 510 in Math; for 10th graders, 430 and 480. Scores at or above both suggest you are on track for college-level coursework. Students aiming for National Merit recognition usually need a much higher Selection Index, often above 200.
What Selection Index do I need for National Merit?
National Merit Scholarship Corporation sets the Commended cutoff nationally and Semifinalist cutoffs separately for each state, and both change every year. Check the latest figures from NMSC or your school counselor, then enter the number in the optional cutoff field to see how close you are.
Does a 10th-grade PSAT count for National Merit?
No. Only the PSAT/NMSQT taken in 11th grade (or the year you are on track to finish high school, under NMSC rules) is used to enter the National Merit Scholarship Program. Earlier tests are practice and a useful predictor.
How does a PSAT score compare to the SAT?
The PSAT/NMSQT is reported on the same vertical scale as the SAT, so a PSAT total of 1200 suggests you would score about 1200 on the SAT at that time. The SAT goes up to 1600 because it includes harder questions; the PSAT tops out at 1520.
