Online Notepad
A simple, private notepad that saves every word automatically in your browser. Keep as many notes as you like, search them, use find and replace, change the font size and download any note as a .txt file. No account, no cloud: your notes stay on this device.
Notes are stored only in this browser on this device. Clearing site data or using a private window removes them, so export a backup now and then.
How to use the Online Notepad
- Start typing. Your note is saved automatically a moment after you stop, and the status bar shows when it was last saved.
- Create more notes with New note. The first line becomes the note's title in the list; use the search box to find a note by any word in it.
- Find and replace with the Find button or Ctrl+F. Matches are highlighted in the note.
- Adjust the view: make the text bigger or smaller, switch to a serif or monospace font, or turn line wrapping off.
- Download or back up: save a note as .txt, or export all notes to a JSON backup that you can import on another computer or browser.

How your notes are stored
This notepad keeps your notes in the browser's localStorage, a small private storage area that belongs to this website on this device. Notes are written there about half a second after you stop typing, and again when you close or switch tabs. Nothing is sent to a server, which is why the notepad also works offline.
- Same browser, same device: your notes are there every time you come back, even after a restart.
- Another browser or computer: notes are not synced. Use Export backup and Import backup to copy them.
- Private / incognito windows: notes are deleted when the window is closed.
- Clearing browsing data: deleting cookies and site data for this website also deletes the notes, so keep a backup of anything important.
- Two tabs open: changes made in one tab show up in the other when it is not being edited.
Frequently asked questions
Where are my notes saved?
In your browser's local storage on this device. They are never uploaded to a server, so nobody else can read them, but they are also not synced: a different browser or computer will not see them. Use Export backup to move notes between devices.
Will my notes be lost if I close the browser?
No. Notes stay in local storage after closing the tab, restarting the browser or the computer. They are deleted if you clear your browser's site data or cookies for this site, or if you use a private or incognito window, which forgets everything when it closes.
How much text can I store?
Browsers usually allow about 5 MB of local storage per site, which is roughly 5 million characters or several thousand pages of plain text. The status bar shows how much space your notes use, and you will see a warning if the storage is full.
Is this online notepad private?
Yes. The text you type is processed only by JavaScript in your browser and is not sent anywhere. Keep in mind that anyone who uses the same browser profile on this device can open the page and read the notes.
Can I use it offline?
Yes. Once the page has loaded you can keep writing without an internet connection, and your notes are saved locally as usual.
How do I move my notes to another computer?
Click Export backup to download a .json file with all notes, then open this page on the other computer and click Import to load the file. You can also download single notes as .txt files.
What keyboard shortcuts are there?
Ctrl+F (Cmd+F on Mac) opens Find and replace while you are in the notepad, Enter jumps to the next match, Shift+Enter to the previous one, Esc closes the find bar and Ctrl+S saves immediately.
