KG to liters formula
To turn a mass into a volume, divide by the density of the substance:
liters = kg ÷ density (kg/L)
For water the answer is easy because 1 kg takes up about 1 liter. Lighter substances fill more space: 1 kg of cooking oil at 0.92 kg/L is 1 ÷ 0.92 = 1.087 L, and 1 kg of flour, which is full of air, fills about 1.7 L. Denser ones fill less: 1 kg of honey is only 0.70 L.

Bulk solids (sugar, flour, sand) vary with how tightly they are packed. Sifted flour can be as light as 0.5 kg/L, while packed flour can exceed 0.7 kg/L.
Where kg to liters helps
Buying fuel or oil by weight. Industrial suppliers often quote kilograms; divide by density to know how many liters fit in your tank or drums.
Cooking from metric recipes. If a recipe lists 500 g of milk, that's 0.5 ÷ 1.03 = 0.485 L, a little under two US cups.
Sizing containers. A 25 kg bag of dry sand takes about 15.6 L, so it fits in a 20 L bucket; wet sand packs tighter at around 13 L.
Use the custom field with the density from a product data sheet for chemicals, paints or anything not listed.
Frequently asked questions
How do you convert kg to liters?
Divide the mass in kilograms by the density in kg/L. For water, 1 kg is about 1 liter; for cooking oil (0.92 kg/L), 1 kg is about 1.09 liters.
How many liters is 1 kg of water?
About 1 liter. Pure water is 1.000 kg/L at 4 °C and 0.998 kg/L at 20 °C, so 1 kg at room temperature is 1.002 L.
How many liters is 1 kg of diesel?
At a typical 0.84 kg/L, 1 kg of diesel is about 1.19 liters, so 40 kg is roughly 47.6 liters.
How many liters is 1 kg of honey?
Honey is about 1.42 kg/L, so 1 kg fills roughly 0.70 liters (700 mL).
Why are flour and sand results only estimates?
They are bulk materials with air between the grains. Their density depends on packing, sifting and moisture, so a measured volume can differ by 10 to 20%.
Can I convert kg to liters without knowing the substance?
No. Kilograms measure mass and liters measure volume; the density of the material is what links them. Only for water are the two numbers almost equal.
