Computer keyboard to piano key chart
The keys are laid out like a piano: one row of letters for the white keys and the row above it for the black keys. The lowest C on screen is on Z; the next C up is on Q (and also on the comma key).
| Note | C | C♯ | D | D♯ | E | F | F♯ | G | G♯ | A | A♯ | B |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

With the default range C3 to C6, Q is middle C (C4) and Y is A4, the 440 Hz tuning note.
Note frequencies
Pianos use twelve-tone equal temperament: every semitone multiplies the frequency by the twelfth root of 2 (about 1.0595), and every octave doubles it. The formula for MIDI note number n is f = 440 × 2(n − 69) / 12 Hz.
| Note | MIDI | Frequency | Note | MIDI | Frequency |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A0 (lowest piano key) | 21 | 27.50 Hz | C4 (middle C) | 60 | 261.63 Hz |
| C2 | 36 | 65.41 Hz | E4 | 64 | 329.63 Hz |
| C3 | 48 | 130.81 Hz | G4 | 67 | 392.00 Hz |
| A3 | 57 | 220.00 Hz | A4 (concert pitch) | 69 | 440.00 Hz |
| C5 | 72 | 523.25 Hz | C8 (highest piano key) | 108 | 4186.01 Hz |

Frequently asked questions
How do I play the piano with my computer keyboard?
The bottom letter row Z X C V B N M plays the white keys of the lower octave from C to B, with S D G H J as the black keys. The top letter row Q W E R T Y U plays the next octave up, with the number keys 2 3 5 6 7 as black keys, and I O P [ ] continue higher. The letters are printed on the keys.
Why is there no sound?
Browsers block audio until you interact with the page, so click or tap a key first. Also check that your device is not muted, the volume slider is up, and no other app is holding the audio output.
Can I play chords?
Yes. You can press several computer keys at once, use several fingers on a touch screen, or hold notes with the sustain pedal. Some computer keyboards cannot register more than 3 or 4 keys at the same time (key rollover), which is a hardware limit.
How does the sustain pedal work?
While the pedal is down, notes keep ringing after you let go of the keys and fade naturally. Releasing the pedal stops them, just like the right pedal on a real piano. Hold Space for a momentary pedal or press the Sustain button to keep it down.
How do I save what I played?
Press Record, play, then Stop. Download WAV renders your performance, including sustain and reverb, into a 44.1 kHz 16-bit stereo WAV file you can open in any audio app. The recording also stays in this browser until you clear it.
Is this a real piano sample?
No. The sound is synthesized live from a set of harmonic partials with a hammer attack, a filter that mellows the tone as it decays, and a decay time that is longer for low notes, similar to real strings. It loads instantly and works offline.
