Stop guessing where the nail goes. Enter the frame height and the hanger drop, choose eye-level (57 in center) or above a sofa or console, and get the exact nail height, plus left-to-right positions for a row of frames.

How to use the Picture Hanging Height Calculator
Choose the placement: eye level for a free wall, or above furniture for art over a sofa, bed, console or mantel.
Measure the frame height and width, then pull the wire tight toward the top and measure from the top of the frame down to it (the hanger drop).
For D-rings, enter the distance between them to get two nail positions.
For a row of frames, enter how many, the space between them and the wall or furniture width to center on.
Mark the wall at the nail height and horizontal positions shown, check with a level and hang.
Picture hanging formulas
Eye level: nail height = center height + frame height ÷ 2 − hanger drop.
Above furniture: nail height = furniture height + gap + frame height − hanger drop.
Gallery row: group width = frames × frame width + (frames − 1) × gap; left margin = (wall width − group width) ÷ 2; each frame's center = left margin + frame width ÷ 2 + n × (frame width + gap).
Example: a 30 × 40 in canvas over a 34 in sofa with an 8 in gap and a 4 in wire drop: 34 + 8 + 30 − 4 = 68 in. Centered over an 84 in sofa, the nail is 42 in from the sofa's left end.

Use a picture hanger rated for the weight (or a wall anchor or stud for heavy mirrors), and for wide or heavy pieces two hooks keep the frame level.
Frequently asked questions
How high should I hang a picture?
Hang it so its center is about 57 in (145 cm) from the floor, the average human eye height used by many galleries. Some designers use 58-60 in in rooms with tall ceilings. Above furniture, leave 6-12 in between the furniture top and the bottom of the frame instead.
How do I work out where the nail goes?
Find the top of the frame first (center height + half the frame height), then subtract the hanger drop. For a 24 in tall frame hung at 57 in with a 3 in drop: 57 + 12 = 69 in, minus 3 = a nail at 66 in from the floor.
What is the hanger drop?
It is the distance from the top edge of the frame down to the point that will rest on the nail: the wire pulled taut toward the top, the sawtooth hanger, or the D-ring. Measure it with the wire pulled up the way it will hang.
How far above a couch should a picture be?
About 8-10 in from the top of the sofa back to the bottom of the frame keeps the art visually connected to the sofa. The art or group is usually about two thirds the width of the sofa.
How much space should be between frames in a gallery wall?
2-3 in for small frames and 3-5 in for larger ones. Keep the spacing consistent and treat the whole group as one piece: center the group at 57 in, or 8-10 in above the furniture.
How do I hang a frame with two D-rings?
Measure the distance between the D-rings and the drop from the top of the frame to each ring. Put both nails at the same height, half the ring spacing to each side of the frame's center line, and use a level between them.
