TV Viewing Distance Calculator
Find how far to sit from a TV of a given size and resolution, or which screen size suits the distance from your sofa. Results use the SMPTE 30° and THX 40° viewing-angle guidelines plus the 20/20 vision limit for 1080p, 4K and 8K pixels.
How to use the TV Viewing Distance Calculator
- Choose the direction: screen size to distance, or seating distance to screen size.
- Enter the TV diagonal (or your distance from the screen) and the unit.
- Pick the resolution: 1080p, 4K or 8K.
- Press Calculate distance to see the recommended range and the pixel-visibility limit.
- Compare sizes in the table and chart below the result.
Viewing distance formulas (16:9 screens)
- Screen width W = diagonal × 16 ÷ √337 ≈ 0.872 × diagonal; height ≈ 0.490 × diagonal
- SMPTE 30°: distance = W ÷ (2 × tan 15°) ≈ 1.63 × diagonal
- THX 40°: distance = W ÷ (2 × tan 20°) ≈ 1.20 × diagonal
- Pixel limit (20/20 vision): distance = (height ÷ vertical pixels) ÷ tan(1′) ≈ pixel pitch × 3,438
TV viewing distance chart
| TV size | THX 40° | SMPTE 30° | 1080p pixels blend | 4K pixels blend |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 43" | 4.3 ft (1.3 m) | 5.8 ft (1.8 m) | 5.6 ft | 2.8 ft |
| 50" | 5.0 ft (1.5 m) | 6.8 ft (2.1 m) | 6.5 ft | 3.3 ft |
| 55" | 5.5 ft (1.7 m) | 7.5 ft (2.3 m) | 7.2 ft | 3.6 ft |
| 65" | 6.5 ft (2.0 m) | 8.8 ft (2.7 m) | 8.5 ft | 4.2 ft |
| 75" | 7.5 ft (2.3 m) | 10.2 ft (3.1 m) | 9.8 ft | 4.9 ft |
| 85" | 8.5 ft (2.6 m) | 11.5 ft (3.5 m) | 11.1 ft | 5.5 ft |
| 100" | 10.0 ft (3.0 m) | 13.6 ft (4.1 m) | 13.0 ft | 6.5 ft |
These are guidelines, not strict rules. Personal preference, room layout, content (sport, films, gaming) and eyesight all matter. Many viewers settle between the THX and SMPTE distances.
Frequently asked questions
How far should I sit from a 65-inch TV?
About 6.5 to 8.8 feet (2.0 to 2.7 m). THX's 40° viewing angle gives 1.2 × the diagonal (78 in ≈ 6.5 ft) and SMPTE's 30° guideline gives about 1.63 × the diagonal (106 in ≈ 8.8 ft). For a 4K set, pixels are not visible beyond about 4.2 ft with 20/20 vision.
What are the SMPTE and THX viewing distance recommendations?
Both are based on how wide the screen appears. SMPTE recommends the screen fill at least 30° of your horizontal view (distance ≈ 1.63 × diagonal for 16:9). THX recommends about 40° for an immersive cinema feel (distance ≈ 1.2 × diagonal).
How is the 4K pixel limit calculated?
A person with 20/20 vision can resolve detail of about 1 arcminute. The calculator divides the screen height by the number of pixel rows to get the pixel pitch, then multiplies by 1 ÷ tan(1/60°) ≈ 3,438. Beyond that distance individual pixels blend together.
Is 4K worth it at my viewing distance?
4K shows more detail than 1080p only if you sit closer than the 1080p pixel-blending distance. For a 55-inch TV that is about 7.2 ft (2.2 m); for 65 inches about 8.5 ft. Beyond that, the extra resolution is hard to see, though 4K TVs often have better HDR and processing.
What size TV should I get for a 10-foot viewing distance?
From 10 ft (120 in), the SMPTE 30° guideline suggests about 74 inches and THX 40° about 100 inches. Many people are comfortable anywhere in that range, so 75 to 85 inches is a common choice.
Do these rules apply to monitors and projectors?
The viewing-angle guidelines apply to any 16:9 screen, including projector screens. Computer monitors are usually used much closer, so the pixel-density limit (see the PPI calculator) matters more there.
