How to use the TV Mounting Height Calculator
Enter the screen size (diagonal) and, if you know it, the TV's full height with bezel from its spec sheet.
Measure your seated eye height from the floor and the distance from your eyes to the wall.
Choose the position: ideal eye level, above a fireplace or console, or a custom center height.
Measure the mounting holes relative to the screen center so the bracket height comes out right.
Mark the bracket height on the wall, and use the tilt suggestion if the TV sits above eye level.
Ideal TV center = seated eye height. Bottom edge = center − TV height ÷ 2.
Above a fireplace: center = mantel height + clearance + TV height ÷ 2.
Bracket height = TV center + offset of the mounting holes above the screen center.
Viewing angle = atan((center − eye height) ÷ viewing distance). Tilt the TV down by about this angle.
Example: a 65 in TV is 31.9 in high (screen). With a 42 in eye height the center is 42 in, the bottom edge about 26 in and the top about 58 in. Above a 54 in mantel with a 4 in gap the center would be about 74.4 in, an upward angle of 15° from 10 ft.

Edges are for the screen only; bezels add a few tenths of an inch to about an inch. Always mount into studs or with anchors rated for the TV's weight, and keep the bracket level.
Frequently asked questions
How high should a TV be mounted?
The center of the screen should be at or near your seated eye height, which is about 40-44 in (102-112 cm) from the floor for most sofas. For a 65 in TV that puts the bottom edge around 24-28 in and the top edge around 56-60 in from the floor.
Where do I put the TV bracket on the wall?
The wall plate goes where the TV's mounting holes will be, not where the screen center is. Measure from the center of the VESA hole pattern to the center of the screen; add that to the TV center height if the holes are above center, or subtract it if they are below.
How high should a TV be above a fireplace?
Usually the TV bottom sits 4-12 in above the mantel, which often puts the center 70 in or more off the floor. That means looking up more than 15° from a typical sofa, so use a tilting or pull-down mount and check the fireplace manual for heat clearance.
How much should I tilt a TV mounted high?
Tilt it down by about the angle between your eye line and the screen center: atan(height above eyes ÷ viewing distance). A center 20 in above your eyes viewed from 10 ft is atan(20 ÷ 120) ≈ 9.5°, so tilt about 10°.
What viewing angle is comfortable?
Looking straight ahead or slightly down is most comfortable. Many home theater guides suggest keeping the vertical angle to the screen center under about 15°; beyond that, neck strain becomes noticeable over a full movie.
How far should I sit from a 65 inch TV?
For a 16:9 TV, about 1.2 to 1.6 times the diagonal gives a 40° to 30° field of view: roughly 6.5-8.7 ft for a 65 in TV. 4K TVs can be viewed closer than 1080p ones without seeing pixels.
How high should a bedroom TV be mounted?
Measure eye height while sitting or lying in bed, usually 45-50 in, and center the TV there or slightly above with a little downward tilt. Wall-mounting across from the bed at dresser height often works well.
