Motorcycle loan formula with a worked example
Lenders use the standard amortization formula: M = P × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)−n), where M is the monthly payment, P is the amount financed, r is the monthly rate (APR ÷ 12 ÷ 100) and n is the number of monthly payments. The amount financed is the price plus sales tax and any fees you roll into the loan, minus your down payment and trade-in equity.
Example: a $15,000 motorcycle with 10% down ($1,500), 6% sales tax ($900) and $650 of freight and setup fees rolled into the loan, at 7.5% APR for 60 months. The amount financed is 15,000 + 900 + 650 − 1,500 = $15,050.00. The monthly rate is 7.5 ÷ 12 ÷ 100 = 0.006250, so M = 15,050.00 × 0.006250 ÷ (1 − 1.006250−60) = $301.57 a month. Over 60 payments you pay $18,094.27, of which $3,044.27 is interest.

For a $7,500 bike at 8% over 48 months, multiply the $10,000 figure by 0.75: 0.75 × $244.13 ≈ $183.10 a month.
Motorcycle loan tips
Ask for the out-the-door price. Dealer freight, setup (prep), documentation and title fees can add a noticeable amount to the advertised price; enter them in the fees field.
Keep the term short. Motorcycles lose value, so a long term can leave you owing more than the bike is worth.
Compare financing offers. Rates vary by lender and depend on your credit, the term and whether the bike is new or used; promotional manufacturer rates may need excellent credit.
Budget for gear and insurance: helmet, riding gear and insurance are ongoing costs on top of the payment.
These figures are estimates for planning only and are not a loan offer or financial advice. Your lender's numbers can differ slightly because of daily interest, the first payment date, rounding and optional add-ons.
Frequently asked questions
How is a motorcycle loan payment calculated?
Motorcycle loans use the standard amortization formula M = P × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)^−n), where P is the amount financed, r is the APR ÷ 12 ÷ 100 and n is the number of months. For example, $20,000 at 7% APR over 60 months is $396.02 a month.
What are freight and prep fees?
Many dealers add a freight or destination charge for shipping the bike and a setup or prep charge for assembling and inspecting it, plus documentation and title fees. Ask for the out-the-door price and enter these in the dealer fees field.
How long can you finance a motorcycle?
Common terms range from 12 to 84 months, depending on the lender and the loan amount. Shorter terms cost less interest; longer terms lower the payment but increase total interest.
What is included in the amount financed?
The bike price plus sales tax and any fees rolled into the loan, minus your down payment and trade-in equity. If you owe more on a trade-in than it is worth, the difference is added to the loan.
What interest rate will I get on a motorcycle loan?
Rates vary by lender and depend on your credit, the term, whether the bike is new or used and current market rates. Compare bank, credit union and dealer financing and enter the APR you are offered.
Does the payment include insurance?
No. The calculator covers the loan only. Insurance, riding gear, maintenance and registration are separate costs.
