Watts to amps formula
- DC: divide watts by volts:
I = P ÷ V. - AC single-phase: divide watts by volts times power factor:
I = P ÷ (V × PF). - AC three-phase: divide watts by √3 times line-to-line volts times power factor:
I = P ÷ (1.732 × V × PF).
Example: a 1,500 W heater on a 120 V outlet draws 1,500 ÷ 120 = 12.5 A. On 230 V it draws 6.52 A.
Reverse formula (amps to watts): W = A × V (× PF for AC, × 1.732 × PF for three-phase). Example: 10 A × 120 V = 1,200 W.
Power factor is 1 for heaters, kettles and incandescent bulbs. Motors, compressors and some power supplies are often 0.8–0.95, which means they draw more amps for the same watts.

Frequently asked questions
How do you convert watts to amps?
Divide the watts by the voltage. Amps = Watts ÷ Volts. For example, 1,200 W ÷ 120 V = 10 A. For AC loads with a power factor below 1, divide by volts × power factor.
How many amps is 1,000 watts?
1,000 W is 8.33 A at 120 V, 4.35 A at 230 V, 4.17 A at 240 V and 83.3 A at 12 V DC.
How many amps is 1,500 watts at 120V?
1,500 W at 120 V is 12.5 A, which fits on a 15 A circuit under the 80% continuous-load rule (12 A is the limit for continuous loads, so 15 A plus margin is safer on a 20 A circuit).
Can I convert watts to amps without voltage?
No. Amps depend on voltage, so you need it. In the US, household outlets are 120 V; in most of Europe, the UK and Australia they are 230–240 V.
What is power factor?
Power factor (PF) is the ratio of real power (watts) to apparent power (volt-amps) in AC circuits. Resistive loads have PF 1; motors are usually 0.8–0.95.
How do I convert amps to watts?
Multiply amps by volts: W = A × V. Click the swap button or type in the Amps box to convert amps to watts.
Is this watts to amps converter free?
Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up and runs in your browser. Always check electrical work with a qualified electrician.
