Amps to watts formula
Watts = Amps × Volts (× PF)
Single-phase AC: W = A × V × PF; DC: W = A × V.
Three-phase AC: W = √3 × A × V(line-to-line) × PF.
Example: 10 A × 120 V = 1,200 W (DC or PF 1).
Reverse formula: A = W ÷ (V × PF). Example: 1,500 W ÷ 120 V = 12.5 A.
The power factor only matters for AC loads such as motors and power supplies; resistive heaters and kettles have a PF close to 1.

About amps and watts
Amps (A). The ampere (amp) is the SI unit of electric current: the flow of electric charge through a circuit.
Watts (W). The watt is the SI unit of power. In an electric circuit, power equals voltage times current (times the power factor for AC).
Frequently asked questions
How do you convert amps to watts?
Multiply amps by volts: W = A × V for DC. For AC multiply by the power factor too (W = A × V × PF), and for three-phase also by √3 (1.732).
How many watts is 15 amps at 120 volts?
15 A × 120 V = 1,800 W. Because continuous loads should stay under 80% of the breaker rating, plan on about 1,440 W on a 15 A household circuit.
How many watts is 13 amps at 230 V?
13 A × 230 V = 2,990 W, about 3 kW, which is the most a UK 13 A plug can supply.
Can I convert amps to watts without the voltage?
No. Watts depend on both current and voltage, so you need the voltage of the circuit. Pick a common voltage above or type your own.
What is 15 amps in watts?
15 A is 1,800 W. This assumes 120 V and a power factor of 1; change the voltage above for other circuits.
