Diaper Calculator
Plan your diaper stash: pick an age range and see roughly how many diapers your baby will use each day and month, how many of each size (newborn to size 6) to buy, how many boxes that is and what it may cost.
Last updated:
Up to 48 months (potty training)
Shifts when each size is outgrown
Typical store brands cost about $0.20–0.40
How to use the Diaper Calculator
- Enter the age range you are planning for, e.g. 0 to 12 months.
- Adjust changes per day and your baby's size if you know they run small or large.
- Edit diapers per box to match the packs you buy, and add a price per diaper if you want a cost.
- Press Calculate to see the total, the split by size and the boxes to buy.
- Use the month table to stock up one size at a time.
Diaper sizes by weight and typical age
| Size | Weight range | Typical age (average baby) | Diapers a day |
|---|---|---|---|
| Newborn | up to 10 lb (4.5 kg) | 0–1 month | 10–12 |
| Size 1 | 8–14 lb (4–6 kg) | 1–3 months | 8–10 |
| Size 2 | 12–18 lb (5–8 kg) | 3–7 months | 7–9 |
| Size 3 | 16–28 lb (7–13 kg) | 6–24 months | 5–7 |
| Size 4 | 22–37 lb (10–17 kg) | 2–3.5 years | 4–6 |
| Size 5 | 27+ lb (12+ kg) | 3+ years or larger toddlers | 4–5 |
| Size 6 | 35+ lb (16+ kg) | larger children before potty training | 4–5 |
Weight ranges are typical for US disposable brands; check your brand's chart because ranges overlap and differ slightly.
How the estimate works
For each month in your range the calculator takes a typical number of changes a day for that age (about 11 for a newborn, falling to around 6 by the end of the first year and 4–5 for older toddlers), multiplies by 30.44 days, and assigns that month to a size based on the WHO median weight for that age. Picking "smaller" or "larger" baby shifts the weights by 12%, so sizes are outgrown sooner or later. Boxes = diapers for that size ÷ diapers per box, rounded up.
Example: from 0 to 12 months an average baby uses about 2,900 diapers, roughly 335 newborn, 580 size 1, 760 size 2 and 1,190 size 3.
Tips for buying diapers
- Don't overbuy newborn size. Babies born over about 8.5 lb may move to size 1 within days.
- Keep receipts and unopened packs. Many stores exchange unopened boxes for a bigger size.
- Compare price per diaper, not per box: box counts vary a lot between pack types.
- Stock up on sizes 2 and 3, which babies wear for the longest stretch.
Frequently asked questions
How many diapers does a baby use in the first year?
Most babies go through roughly 2,500 to 3,000 disposable diapers in their first year. Newborns use the most, often 10–12 a day, falling to about 6–7 a day by 9–12 months. This calculator estimates about 2,900 for an average baby.
How many newborn diapers should I buy?
Many babies outgrow newborn diapers within a few weeks, and larger babies may skip them entirely. One box of about 100–150 newborn diapers is usually enough to start; buy size 1 in larger quantities.
Which diaper size will my baby need the longest?
Size 3 usually lasts the longest, from around 6 to 18 months for an average baby, because its weight range (about 16–28 lb) is the widest. Stocking up on size 3 is often the safest bet.
When should I move up a diaper size?
Go by weight and fit rather than age. Move up when diapers leak often, leave red marks on the thighs or waist, or the tabs barely reach the front. Diaper weight ranges overlap, so either size can fit in the overlap zone.
How many diapers a day does a toddler use?
Around 5–6 a day between 1 and 2 years, and about 4–5 a day from 2 years until potty training, which many children finish between 2 and 3.5 years.
Are diaper sizes the same across brands?
Roughly. Most US brands use similar weight ranges (Newborn up to 10 lb, Size 1 8–14 lb, Size 2 12–18 lb, Size 3 16–28 lb, Size 4 22–37 lb, Size 5 27+ lb, Size 6 35+ lb), but the exact cut-offs and fit differ, so check the pack.
