How to use the When to Take a Pregnancy Test Calculator
- Choose a method: last menstrual period or date of unprotected sex.
- Enter the date, plus your average cycle length (28 days if unsure).
- Press Calculate test dates.
- Read the earliest and most accurate dates and the day-by-day table.
- Test with first-morning urine and retest a few days later if it is negative but your period has not started.
How the test dates are calculated
From your last period:
- Expected (missed) period = first day of last period + cycle length
- Ovulation ≈ expected period − 14 days
- Earliest test ≈ ovulation + 10 days
- Most accurate test = the day your period is due, or later
From the date of sex: earliest test ≈ 10 days later (only if you ovulated around that day); most reliable ≈ 21 days later.
Example: last period started June 1, cycle 30 days → ovulation around June 17, earliest test June 27, period due July 1, most accurate from July 1.
How likely a test is to show a pregnancy
| Days past ovulation | 28-day cycle day | Result if pregnant |
|---|---|---|
| Before 8 DPO | Before day 22 | Too early: implantation has usually not happened |
| 8–9 DPO | Day 23–24 | Very unlikely to show |
| 10–11 DPO | Day 25–26 | Possible with a sensitive early-result test |
| 12–13 DPO | Day 27–28 | Often positive |
| 14+ DPO | Day 29+ (missed period) | Reliable for most people |
These are general estimates. Ovulation can shift from cycle to cycle, and tests differ in sensitivity. Speak to a healthcare professional about any concerns.
Frequently asked questions
When is the earliest I can take a pregnancy test?
The earliest a sensitive early-result test may turn positive is about 10 days after ovulation, roughly 4 days before a missed period in a 28-day cycle. Many pregnancies will not show yet at that point, so a negative early result is not reliable.
When is a pregnancy test most accurate?
From the first day of your missed period. Most home tests claim about 99% accuracy from that day. If it is negative and your period still has not come, test again a few days to a week later.
How many days after sex should I take a pregnancy test?
For the most reliable result, wait until 21 days after unprotected sex, or until your period is late if that comes first. Pregnancy hormone (hCG) is only produced after the fertilised egg implants, 6–12 days after fertilisation.
Why might I get a negative test even though I am pregnant?
Testing too early, diluted urine, a late ovulation or not following the test instructions can all give a false negative. hCG roughly doubles every 2–3 days in early pregnancy, so waiting a few days often changes the result.
Can a blood test detect pregnancy earlier?
Yes. A quantitative blood test ordered by a doctor can detect hCG about 11 days after conception, slightly earlier than most urine tests.
What if my cycles are irregular?
Use your longest typical cycle length, or count from the date of sex instead. If you are unsure, testing 21 days after unprotected sex gives a reliable answer regardless of your cycle.
