Halfway Point Calculator
Planning to meet in the middle? Enter two or more addresses, cities or coordinates and see the exact halfway point on a map, the nearest town, and how far each person is from it. Works for groups of up to 10 locations.

Green pins are your starting points, the orange star is the halfway point. Lines show the straight (great-circle) route to it.
How to use the Halfway Point Calculator
- Enter the first two locations: a city ("Denver, CO"), a street address, or coordinates like 39.74, -104.99.
- Add more people with "Add location" if a group is meeting (up to 10).
- Press Find halfway point. Each location is looked up and pinned on the map.
- Read the result: the halfway point's nearest town, its coordinates and how far each person is from it.
- Copy or open the spot in a map app to look for a restaurant, park or rest stop nearby.
How the halfway point is found
- Look up each location. Addresses are converted to latitude (φ) and longitude (λ). Typed coordinates and built-in cities skip this step.
- Convert to 3D: x = cos φ · cos λ, y = cos φ · sin λ, z = sin φ for every location.
- Average the x, y and z values of all locations.
- Convert back: λ = atan2(y, x), φ = atan2(z, √(x² + y²)). That point is the halfway point (or the center of a group).
- Distances to the halfway point use the haversine great-circle formula on a sphere of radius 6,371 km (3,959 mi).
Simply averaging latitudes and longitudes works for nearby places but goes wrong over long distances and near the 180° meridian. The 3D method above gives the true middle of the shortest path.
Example halfway points (straight-line)
| Between | Distance apart | Halfway point is near |
|---|---|---|
| New York, NY and Boston, MA | ~190 mi (306 km) | Central Connecticut, near Middletown (south of Hartford) |
| Los Angeles, CA and San Francisco, CA | ~347 mi (559 km) | Central California, near Coalinga and Parkfield |
| Chicago, IL and Detroit, MI | ~237 mi (381 km) | Southwest Michigan, near Kalamazoo |
| Dallas, TX and Houston, TX | ~225 mi (362 km) | East-central Texas, near Centerville |
| Seattle, WA and Portland, OR | ~145 mi (234 km) | Lewis County, Washington, southeast of Chehalis |
Enter any of these pairs to see the exact point and the nearest town on the map.
Tips for picking a meeting place
- Check driving time too. Highways rarely follow the straight line, so compare drive times from both sides to two or three towns near the halfway point.
- Look for a town on a major road close to the star on the map. It usually has restaurants, fuel and parking.
- For groups, the geographic center keeps the total distance balanced but not equal; the table shows who travels farthest.
- Share the result by copying the summary, or send a link with the locations as
?a=City&b=City.
Frequently asked questions
How is the halfway point calculated?
Each location's latitude and longitude is turned into a 3D point on a sphere, the points are averaged, and the average is projected back to the Earth's surface. For two places this gives the exact middle of the great-circle (shortest) route, so both people are the same straight-line distance away. For three or more places it gives the geographic center of the group.
Is the halfway point the same as halfway by car?
Not exactly. This tool finds the point halfway as the crow flies. Roads, rivers and mountains can make the driving distance from each side different. Use the result as a starting area, then check driving times to a few towns nearby before you pick the meeting spot.
Can I find the midpoint between three or more people?
Yes. Add up to 10 locations and the calculator returns their geographic center, the point that balances everyone's position on the globe. The table shows each person's distance to it so you can see who has the longest trip.
Why is the halfway point not on the straight line I see on the map?
Flat web maps use the Mercator projection, which stretches the globe. The shortest path between two distant places is a great circle, which looks curved on the map. The dashed lines show these great-circle routes, and the midpoint lies exactly halfway along them.
Which address formats work?
City names with a state or country ("Austin, TX", "Lyon, France"), full street addresses, ZIP codes with a city, landmarks, and decimal coordinates such as 40.7128, -74.0060. Nearly 300 major cities are built in and work even without address search; everything else is looked up with OpenStreetMap's Nominatim service.
Is my address stored or shared?
Your locations are kept only in your browser so the tool remembers them next time. To turn an address into coordinates, the text you type is sent to OpenStreetMap's public Nominatim geocoder; city names from the built-in list and typed coordinates are handled entirely on your device.
What does the nearest major city mean?
Besides the town name returned by the map service, the tool shows the closest city from its built-in list of nearly 300 large and regional cities, with the distance and direction from the halfway point. It is a quick way to see which bigger place the meeting point is near.
