Walking pace
Pace as mm:ss (18:30), speed as a number (3.2).
Optional
Used to estimate step length (67 in = 5 ft 7 in).
Same unit as height; heel to heel of one step.
Adds time for hills using Naismith's rule.

How to use the Walking Time Calculator
Choose what you know: a distance, a walking time or a number of steps.
Enter the value and its unit (miles, km, meters or feet for distance).
Pick a pace preset, or choose Custom and type your pace (18:30 per mile) or speed.
Optionally add your height for a step count, uphill elevation gain and a start time.
Press Calculate walking time and compare the result at other paces in the table.
Walking time formulas
Time = distance ÷ speed (2 miles at 3 mph = 0.667 h = 40 minutes)
Distance = speed × time (45 minutes at 3.5 mph = 2.6 miles)
Pace = 60 ÷ speed in minutes per mile (3 mph = 20:00 per mile)
Hills (Naismith's rule): add 1 hour per 600 m (≈ 2,000 ft) of climbing

Tips for estimating your own pace
Time a known distance. Walk a measured mile or a 400 m track lap at your normal pace and enter the result as a custom pace.
Brisk walking generally means you can talk but not sing; for most adults that is around 3–4 mph.
Plan for stops. Traffic lights, crowds, children and photo stops can add 10–20% to city walks.
Measure your step length by counting steps over a known distance and dividing the distance by the count.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to walk a mile?
At an average pace of 3 mph a mile takes 20 minutes. A leisurely 2.5 mph takes 24 minutes, a brisk 3.5 mph about 17 minutes, and a very brisk 4 mph 15 minutes.
How long does it take to walk 1 km or 5 km?
At 3 mph (4.8 km/h) one kilometer takes about 12.5 minutes and 5 km about 1 hour 2 minutes. At a brisk 3.5 mph (5.6 km/h), 5 km takes about 53 minutes.
What is the average walking speed?
Healthy adults typically walk at about 2.5–3.5 mph (4–5.6 km/h), and 3 mph is a common planning figure. Speed falls with age, heavy loads, crowds and rough or hilly ground.
How far can I walk in 30 minutes?
About 1.5 miles (2.4 km) at an average 3 mph, 1.25 miles at a leisurely 2.5 mph, and 1.75–2 miles at a brisk 3.5–4 mph.
How many steps are in a mile, and how long do 10,000 steps take?
With a step length of about 41% of your height, a 5 ft 7 in person takes roughly 2,300 steps per mile. 10,000 steps is then about 4.4 miles (7 km), roughly 1 hour 27 minutes at 3 mph. Taller people take fewer, longer steps.
How do hills change walking time?
Naismith's rule, a long-used guide for hikers, allows 1 extra hour for every 600 m (about 2,000 ft) of ascent on top of the time for the distance. Steep descents and rough trails also slow you down, so add rests for long hikes.
