Net worth usually climbs through working life as people pay down mortgages and build retirement savings, peaks around ages 65 to 74 and then declines as savings are spent in retirement.
How the percentile is estimated
Between two known points with positive values, the calculator interpolates on a logarithmic scale, because wealth is spread over a very wide range: P = P1 + (P2 − P1) × ln(NW ÷ W1) ÷ ln(W2 ÷ W1). Near zero and for negative values it uses straight-line interpolation. Above the 99th percentile it uses a Pareto tail fitted to the 95th and 99th percentiles, the standard model for top wealth. For age groups, the national curve is scaled by the group's median below the middle and gradually toward its mean at the top.
Frequently asked questions
What is the median net worth in the US?
According to the Federal Reserve's 2022 Survey of Consumer Finances, median family net worth was about $192,900 and the mean (average) was about $1,063,700. Half of families had more than the median and half had less.
What net worth is top 10% in the US?
Using rounded 2022 SCF figures, a household net worth of roughly $1.9 million puts you in about the top 10%, roughly $3.8 million in the top 5% and roughly $13.7 million in the top 1%. These thresholds rise over time with asset prices.
What is the median net worth by age?
In the 2022 SCF, median net worth was about $39,000 for families with a head under 35, $135,600 for 35 to 44, $247,200 for 45 to 54, $364,500 for 55 to 64, $409,900 for 65 to 74 and $335,600 for 75 and over.
Should I include my home in my net worth?
Yes. Net worth in the Federal Reserve survey includes home value minus the mortgage, along with retirement accounts, other savings and investments, vehicles and business interests, minus all debts. Including it keeps your number comparable with the data.
Why is the average net worth so much higher than the median?
Wealth is very unevenly spread. A small number of very wealthy families raise the average far above what a typical family has, so the median is the better measure of the middle.
How accurate is this calculator?
It gives an estimate. The built-in data are rounded percentile points and values in between are interpolated; age-group curves are scaled from the national curve using each group's median and mean. Results can be off by a few percentile points, and the data reflect 2022.
How often is this data updated?
The Survey of Consumer Finances is carried out every three years. When new figures are published you can paste them into the custom distribution box to update the comparison.
