Zakat formula
Zakat = (zakatable assets − debts due now) × 2.5%, if the net amount ≥ nisab for one lunar year
- Gold nisab = 85 g × gold price per gram (24k)
- Silver nisab = 595 g × silver price per gram
- Gold value = grams × 24k price × karat ÷ 24 (e.g. 22k is 91.7% pure)
Example: cash and savings of 17,000, 20 g of 22k gold at 105 per gram (1,925) and 5,000 in shares give 23,925 in assets. Minus 1,500 debts due now = 22,425, which is above the silver nisab of 595 × 1.25 = 743.75, so zakat = 22,425 × 2.5% = 560.63.

Frequently asked questions
How is zakat calculated?
Add up your zakatable assets (cash, savings, gold, silver, trade investments, business stock and money owed to you), subtract debts that are due now, and if the result is at or above the nisab and has been held for one lunar year, pay 2.5% of it.
What is the nisab?
The nisab is the minimum wealth on which zakat is due. It equals 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver at current prices. Some scholars use 87.48 g of gold and 612.36 g of silver; the difference is small.
Should I use the gold or silver nisab?
Both are valid opinions. The silver nisab is much lower, so more people pay zakat and the poor benefit more; many zakat organizations recommend it for savings in cash. The gold nisab is used by others. Choose according to your school or a scholar's advice.
Why is there a 2.577% option?
Zakat is 2.5% per lunar (Hijri) year of about 354 days. If you calculate on a solar (Gregorian) year of 365 days, the equivalent rate is about 2.577% so that nothing is underpaid.
Is zakat due on gold jewelry?
Scholars differ. The Hanafi school counts gold and silver jewelry worn regularly, while the majority of other schools exempt personal jewelry in normal use. Enter your jewelry in the gold field if your school includes it.
Which debts can I deduct?
Commonly, debts that are due now or within the coming year, such as bills, overdue payments and the next installments, are deducted. Most contemporary scholars do not deduct the entire long-term balance of a mortgage.
Is the calculator a religious ruling?
No. It is an arithmetic aid. For specific situations such as retirement funds, shares and business assets, consult a qualified scholar or zakat organization.
