How to use the Millionaire Calculator
Enter what you have saved or invested today and how much you add each month.
Set an expected annual return and an inflation rate.
Keep the $1,000,000 target or change it to any goal.
Optionally raise contributions yearly and enter your age to see the age you reach the target.
Read the time to target, then check the chart and table for the year-by-year path.
How long it takes to become a millionaire
With a starting balance B₀, a fixed monthly contribution C and a monthly return r (annual return ÷ 12), the balance after m months is:
FV = B₀(1 + r)m + C × ((1 + r)m − 1) ÷ r
Setting FV equal to your target G and solving for m gives the number of months:
m = ln((G × r + C) ÷ (B₀ × r + C)) ÷ ln(1 + r)
Example: $25,000 saved, $750 a month and 7% a year (r ≈ 0.005833). m = ln((1,000,000 × 0.005833 + 750) ÷ (25,000 × 0.005833 + 750)) ÷ ln(1.005833) ≈ 343 months, or about 28.6 years. If contributions rise every year the calculator simulates each month instead.

Returns are assumed constant and compounded monthly; real markets go up and down, so treat these as planning estimates.
Why inflation matters
A million dollars in 30 years will not buy what a million buys today. Its value in today's money is G ÷ (1 + inflation)years: at 3% inflation, $1,000,000 in 30 years is worth about $411,987 today. The calculator shows both the nominal date and how long it takes to be a millionaire in today's purchasing power.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to become a millionaire?
It depends on how much you invest and the return. Starting from zero, investing $500 a month at 7% takes about 36 years, $1,000 a month about 28 years, and $2,000 a month about 20 years. Use the calculator with your own numbers.
What formula does the millionaire calculator use?
It compounds monthly: each month the balance grows by the annual return ÷ 12 and your contribution is added. Without yearly contribution increases, the months needed are m = ln((G × r + C) ÷ (B₀ × r + C)) ÷ ln(1 + r).
What return should I assume?
Many planners use about 6% to 7% for a diversified stock-heavy portfolio before inflation, and lower for bond-heavy portfolios. Long-run US stock returns have been higher, but past results do not guarantee future returns, so try a few rates.
Will $1 million be enough in the future?
Inflation reduces what money buys. At 3% inflation, $1 million in 30 years has the purchasing power of about $412,000 today. The calculator shows this value and how long it takes to reach a real, inflation-adjusted million.
Does this include taxes and fees?
No. Fund fees and taxes reduce your effective return. Lower the expected return by your fund's expense ratio and any taxes on gains if you invest outside a tax-advantaged account.
Why does growth eventually exceed my contributions?
Compounding means returns earn returns. In the early years most of the balance is money you put in; later, yearly growth can exceed your yearly contributions, which is why starting early matters so much.
